The young Rousset was my 1st love in the Goldbergs, and still a winner IMO. I cannot stand Hantaï - in anything - so the choice be those two would be easy for me.... :D

Quote from: Irons on September 24, 2023, 12:55:34 AMI must look out for that one, Jeffrey. Butterworth an excellent song composer. Wonder if Richmond Yorkshire or Surrey? ;) Guess the former.
Yes, because it's 'coming up from Richmond to Kew' which would not be too far. However, visiting Rishi Sunak's constituency in the Yorkshire Dales would be a bit of a trek!

I readily consider DNP one of VW's greatest works, regardless of genre. It easily fits as a favorite 20th Century Requiem too, amongst Britten and Hindemith, even though it is not labelled as such.

Having recently gone through Thomson's RVW symphony cycle with the LSO, his vision of VW sits side by side the cathedral acoustic. A grand, broad, sometimes apocalyptic journey. So it is here with DNP, and Wiens' soprano sounds beautiful.

I doubt anyone is beating down the door to hear Brian Rayner Cook's FMS, but it is OK.

It's a fine CD but, them again, I don't know of a dud recording of DNP.

Quote from: VonStupp on September 24, 2023, 06:39:38 AMThat it is...'on the way to Kew'. I love Butterworth's gentle orchestral scoring too.

My wife chuckled at the title Love Blows as the Wind Blows. Modern verbiage does the past no favors.

Like the line 'up your pathway strays' from A E Houseman quoted in VW's 'An Oxford Elegy' :o

Not the most appropriate title for a recording in case the buyer in question is only Spanish-speaking.

Delighted to hear this wondrous music, it makes me feel so good. The 2nd mov. Pastorale can't be more placid and lovely.

It's John Rutter's birthday, so I listened to his Requiem. Before I met her, my girlfriend sang part of it.

I've heard some good things about the Requiem, but not enough to overcome my musical reservations about Rutter and set to listening to it, myself. What I've heard of a saccharine Pie Jesu ain't helping, there.

TD: I've started dipping into this. Tomorrow I'll have a full report for @Pohjolas Daughter

One of the most curious things about this disc  (recorded in 1991) is the blurb on the back informing us that "Virko Baley is the Music Director and Conductor of the Las Vegas Symphony Orchestra."

Morning listening:

From the shelves. Absolutely great recording. This and the recordings of the Binchois Consort (Hyperion) are my favourites in music by early English Renaissance composer Walter Frye (died 1475).

Thanks. Butterworth spent his childhood "up North". Indeed, honoured with a blue plaque in York.
