Bought this for the Berio.  It works nicely, though it lacks the overall impact of the composer's version.  Clearly, I should listen to at least one of Eschenbach's two recordings.  The Schubert is light and bouncy and so-so.  Manacorda still rules in the small band Ninth.

Haydn!!!

Jumping around a lot. Tom Beghin sonatas, as well as some Bavouzet and Brautigan. last night played several hours of Pienaar's new set.
Was playing the venerable Vienna Chamber Orchestra symphony edition (which I love), but switched to Sir Neville Marriner's charming set with St. MartinsITF. Back to Beghin soon.
It's all good...

The Dumky.  Stupefyingly great in every regard.  The Giltburg-Jarůšková-Jarůšek Trio, as expected, deliver the new reference set of the complete trios, displacing the Suk Trio.  In this work, in addition to the great Suk Trio, there's also the gobsmackingly great Trio Owon, and the GJJ do indeed sound marginally preferable to either.  Man, I hope they record some core rep beyond this.

That it is...'on the way to Kew'. I love Butterworth's gentle orchestral scoring too.

My wife chuckled at the title Love Blows as the Wind Blows. Modern verbiage does the past no favors.

An interesting succinct work. The finale struck me as the highlight.

Disc two, a pleasant but too slow First, and a fast, punchy Fifth that ultimately whiffs.  Thomas Ades shows how to do small, swift, and punchy with maximum impact.

I readily consider DNP one of VW's greatest works, regardless of genre. It easily fits as a favorite 20th Century Requiem too, amongst Britten and Hindemith, even though it is not labelled as such.

Having recently gone through Thomson's RVW symphony cycle with the LSO, his vision of VW sits side by side the cathedral acoustic. A grand, broad, sometimes apocalyptic journey. So it is here with DNP, and Wiens' soprano sounds beautiful.

I doubt anyone is beating down the door to hear Brian Rayner Cook's FMS, but it is OK.

Bach, JS - Goldberg Variations on harpsichord for the afternoon - 3 of 4 versions in my collection:

Pierre Hantaï, Colin Booth, & Ignacio Prego - all excellent performances (reviews attached) - but must say that Booth is impressive on a harpsichord he built, after a Mietke from about 1710.  Dave :)

Wow!  That's high praise indeed! I'll have to see if I can do some comparisons.

Yes mediocre sound quality though the performance is sharp.

Hi Que - I also have the 4-CD box of Christophe Rousset w/ one disc devoted to the Goldbergs, but I rarely give it a spin - maybe tomorrow!  Agree w/ you on the two choices - believe I liked Booth the best following by Prego, although Hantai was still quite good - maybe I'll do a Rousset vs. Hantai comparison tomorrow?  Dave :)
