Here are two of mine, not in any way professional but knocked out to do the job. I felt that Dali was sufficiently OTT to complement Mahlers' huge scores!

:o

I love Dali and agree that his artwork works well here. Very well done!  :)

I like that Dali pic with Mater gloriosa clasping her hands. The whole thing has an upward striving, swirling quality to it that really fits the music. Upon closer look it also looks strangely like an ad for a Christopher Colombus movie :D.

Here's one I did using the primitive Word facilities. I don't know how to have it appear in the post, it only appears as an attachment :P

That is a nice photo in that cover. I do not think you can link in a preview of a work document though, but for images, You have to upload them to another site... I use Photobucket to store album covers, but you could do the same with Google Pages or any number of photo sites. There are a lot of free options out there. To embed the image in your post you just surround the link to the image with [ img ] and [ /img ] tags minus the space. Or use the button above after highlighting the image link.

That makes my cover for the same recording languish.

I never do something any more complicated than, lets say... this Elman one

Is that Mahler 8 available as a download somewhere?

But yes, I think that cover has a little more "pop" in it than yours. ;)

Just ducking in for a second to say, this is a great thread!  Bad cover art is one of my pet peeves about classical recordings in general, and I love some of the ideas you all have come up with.

I don't know if it's the same one, but there's youtube videos of a 'youth orchestra' under Rattle in the 8th. I can't imagine returning to it often, though. Watching 'Sir Simon' emote and jump all over the place is somewhat distracting.

Some blatent ripping off of M's sunset idea, as I wanted to give it a try to see if I could. :P

The sunset idea is something strange but apparently popular with this work:

Should it not be a  sunrise instead?

Hehe, indeedie. I guess the designer's primary idea is "EPIC MUSIC = EPIC SCENERY", although I am getting tired of seeing cliffs on the front of Bruckner CD booklets...

I think I enjoy your design much more than the Telarc one that follows it. Very nice.

Me, too.  Gorgeous.

Lilas Pastia

Definitely. The Telarc looks like a tired printing of an early colour photo. No inspiration at all.

QuoteThat is a nice photo in that cover.

It's from the same park my avatar photo is taken from. Somewhere in Riga IIRC. I think it's a great idea to have sculptures in a park.

Hey, don't run!  ;D  That's pretty cool!  Another pet peeve: classical music is perceived as "humorless."  I actually think that's a pretty great cover.  Is the image more or less from Monteverdi's era?  (Doesn't matter either way, but if it is, makes it even more clever.)

Here is yet another crack at that Mahler 2nd. I borrowed Lethe's design ideas and Lilas's suggestion for a sunrise and my inability to sacrifice the sacred theme... with all of that, I came up with this:

That one is brilliant! Please do not stop posting ideas... and how about a link to the music too.  ;D

Might want to double-check your spelling of the ensemble name on that one, in case you haven't already.   ;)

I had not. Here is the advantage to posting them... My editing skills are somewhat suspect. Thanks! :)

The Wikipedia article says 16th century - they also had another sea monk picture from 1869. It looks like there were no great revolutions in the style of the sea monk artists in the years between... they must've perfected their methods early on.

A few months ago I'd have said it was on Operashare so I couldn't link externally, but you could sign up in seconds, but ever since they've started being over-protective dicks, I no longer care :D here you go:

http://rapidshare.com/files/48019283/Monteverdi_Von_Matacic.zip

I haven't downloaded it - I was looking for a random performance for inspiration and would be very surprised if it beat my current favourites - but if anybody DLs and enjoys it, tell me and I'll get it too :)

Btw, beclemund, your latest cover reminds me sort of this one, but with a prettier sky:
