"Javert, though frightful, had nothing ignoble about him. Probity, sincerity, candor, conviction, the sense of duty, are things which may become hideous when wrongly directed; but which, even when hideous, remain grand."

Thanks.  Always fun to reconnect with the great folks here.

Girl Missing....

The plot has just about enough to sustain continuous viewing.

Blood Money from 1933. One of Martin Scorcese's top 15 gangster movies that influenced his film making.  If you can track down a copy, worth a watch if you enjoy these early crime films.  Stars Judith Anderson that many of you know from Hitch's Rebecca.

Also took in Smart Money from 1931.  This one is the only film that Robinson and Cagney did together the entire time they were both at Warner. Cagney was filming Public Enemy at the time, became also a big star and the rest is history while Robinson was trying to recapture his Little Caesar role with a soft heart angle in this film.  By the poster you would think that they both shared screen time equally, but Cagney was definitely a supporting cast member here.  Decent, but not great.

Over the past two evenings, I watched Hannah and Her Sisters.  With me, it seems to be something of a 50/50 chance, on first watching a Woody Allen movie, whether whatever my (for want of a better word) hangups are checked at the door, and I simply appreciate it at first, or if my critical knickers are in a subtle twist.  So, when I first saw this, I was left on the cool side.  Now, I'm over it, and I see that it is just as good as the Sarge and Ebert (and others) have said.

From 1959, a B titled I, Mobster.  The story of a young hood who tries to become #1 and.....well,you know the rest.  Been done hundreds of times, and this telling at a 6/10 IMO.

The Intersection....

Passable overall but Stone gives a very good performance.

Match PointUn potboiler supérieur.  Superbly styled, and again (as we expect) benefiting from an exquisite ear for music.  I hesitate to say any more lest I foist a spoiler.

This is the first 100% talking gangster film.  (IMDB has it as the first feature film with all synchronous dialogue.)  Fairly wooden performances and the story is as predictable as the next DC superhero installment, but fun to take in from a historical film watching experience.

And

A silent crime/gangster movie from 1915.  This one actually had some very cool film sequences. The story held up as well,so if you are a fan of the silent era and have not caught this, you can find it in its entirety (except for one lost scene) on the web.  The shots of Sing Sing prison are actually filmed on location and the backgrounds are a treasure trove of historical shots of the time.

RAW, a French-Belgian horror drama film written and directed by Julia Ducourna. A coming-of-age story about a teenage vegetarian girl who discovers a hidden craving for...raw meat. I thoroughly enjoyed this little gem, but I would recommend eating dinner well before watching it.

My reaction to the silent film:

Hmm... I'm guessing Turnabout Intruder?

A decent detective thriller, a bit slow at times. Couple of points:

Paul Newman sure could wear that mid-grey suit (and that is 18 year old Melanie Griffith)

For Sci-Fi Sat/Sun, a recent purchase of a 1957 "classic" that got the BD treatment:

I am a sucker for these old classic sci-fi /monster films and this was a must have. One of Willis H. O'Brien's (original King Kong) last films.  For giant bug movies, nothing tops THEM in my books, but this one was a lot of fun as well.

More enjoyable than the dire reviews from many had led me to believe
