I look forward to your report. I really enjoy Washington, yet I've missed this thus  far.

It is a good one Karl  ;)

This is quite a surreal, single actor film. A Maltese fisherman encounters an abandoned yacht on his daily run. He boards the abandoned yacht and his adventures begin. His trial becomes one of endurance and mental strength. If you are looking for something different then this is for you. I enjoyed it.

Interesting.  What do you think of "All is Lost"?  A movie with nearly the same premise featuring a single actor and no dialog?

First time seeeing this, only about halfway through. Will get to see the rest over the weekend.

A fantastic film!  I love how it draws you in and how great the leads are here with Denzel always on the edge, not knowing which way he'll go.  Brilliant film.

The Walton made a strong impression on me; if you've never read I recommend it if you can find it. [It seems to OOP and priced accordingly, unlike the Alexander.

Quote from: Madiel on February 24, 2023, 01:24:33 AMIt is indeed based on one of the Lloyd Alexander books. I have fond memories of that series. I'm not certain that I ever watched the movie however. My recollection is that reviews were middling. VS is currently going through a bleak period of Disney films where they weren't really having any big successes.

I haven't read the source novels, but the animated film is apparently cobbled together from the first two. If I can find them used, I might try to find the Prydain books and the Walton books for my oldest; I think she would be interested.

The movies are definitely different, I think starting in the 70's; not so universally appealing as their earlier classics.

From the little I have read, it seems there was a lot of behind-the-scenes fighting in production too, particularly following the death of Walt Disney.

Black Cauldron reminded me a little of the Dragon's Lair arcade game.

Thinking it over, the Walton books were not YA (to the extent that the category existed back then); I read just about anything that came my way in middle school.

My wife and I were the same way; my daughter, who is in middle school, is following that trend too.

Yes, I liked it.

Vincent Price, Alan Young

26th Disney Animated Feature:
A Sherlock Holmes/Dr. Watson yarn with mice. I assume the success of The Rescuers, another rodent tale, helped this one along.

A score by Henry Mancini, and the evil Professor Ratigan number (very few musical songs here) presages some of the Disney Renaissance villain choruses.

They both sound interesting.

Thanks for reminding me about "All is Lost".  I felt sad when I heard that Redford said that it would be his last movie.  :(

Both films are surely worth a watch, PD.

Pohjolas Daughter

Last night, I watched "The Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Men Tell No Tales".  I had thought that it was the next one in the series that I hadn't seen, but am wondering if I missed viewing No. 4 as (and without spoiling it for others--hopefully), I didn't recall seeing how Orlando Bloom's character managed to get stuck in the predicament that he was in at the beginning of Dead Men?

In any event, I enjoyed it overall.

I only recently saw any of these thinking they were way too excessive in a Michael Bay way (macho guys walking away from gargantuan and implausible expositions in slow motion type of thing).  So during the Depp/Amber Heard trial it piqued my interest so finally saw the first one and to my surprise, absolutely loved it!  Depp owned that character...or maybe I've become dumber.  I haven't seen any after the first one.

Don't worry, we're all getting dumber.

Tár starring Kate Blanchette. It's a very slow but compelling character study. She does an amazing job of portraying a powerful woman whose life begins to unravel. The musical sequences are very well done, and the musicians seem to be actually playing their instruments. Blanchette had to relearn to play the piano. My main issues are the length: 2:38 is about 30 minutes too long, there are a number of rather brief, seemingly random scenes that don't add anything to her character or the narrative, and it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. That's a fairly minor issue since I don't need to be spoon fed like so many scripts do.

It was a $5.99 rental via Amazon Prime Video, so it wasn't a huge risk! Yes, some trimming would improve it. I admired her fierce intelligence, but she was a very unlikeable person. Still, it was worth watching in my opinion. Lots of musical name dropping, too!

I think the ambiguity of some of the scenes late in the movie elevate it.  The movie is completely focused on Tar's perception and then the line becomes so blurred that it is difficult to tell if a scene actually happened or if it was in her head.

I agree that the movie is too long, but it is hard to know what to cut.  Even when a scene doesn't directly tie in with the character arc, it usually provides world building.  Especially important for film goers that no nothing about this type of world.

I couldn't help but notice the parallels with James Levine...
