Pohjolas Daughter

Quote from: Karl Henning on May 20, 2023, 12:08:26 PMPerhaps the only non-SFSO interviewee was Patrick Stewart. I'd love the know the story behind this appearance.
I'll have to watch it again and see if I can deduce it.  I have read that he has a love for classical music.  What did he have to say (roughly)?

A worthy finish to the trilogy.  It was heartfelt, and while it still had many funny moments, it is more serious than the other two.

Quote from: Cato on May 20, 2023, 01:14:50 PMMy mother-in-law loved Linda Darnell so much, that when my wife was born, "Linda" was the name of choice!

Yes, for a while in the 1940's, Linda Darnell was fairly famous.  Her personal life was another Hollywood example of money not being able to buy happiness.

Hi Cato - about a week ago I posted on a 1950 film No Way Out w/ Linda Darnell - an unfortunate accident in a house fire (partial quote below from Wiki) - only 41 years old when she died. Dave :)

QuoteDarnell died on April 10, 1965, from burns that she had received in a house fire in Glenview, Illinois, early the day before. She had been staying at the home of her former secretary and the secretary's daughter and had just received notice from her agent of three possible movie contracts. She was trapped on the second floor of the home by heat and smoke, as the fire had started in the living room. (Source)

Unfortunate rhyming with the demise of her character in Hangover Square.

It occurs to me, having seen and enjoyed both The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist, that I haven't seen The Green Mile (also directed by Frank Darabont and based on a Stephen King book. So, I'm fixin' to, but at three hours, it's too long for me to slip into the tray tonight. Roger Ebert's review.

Also not strictly the topic: A Coen Bros. movie which had been off my radar: The Man Who Wasn't There. An exquisitely eloquent review by Mr Ebert.

Shawshank Redemption is a masterpiece.  A flawless film.  The Mist is entertaining but has a few missteps.  I don't care much for The Green Mile.  Maybe I should revisit it but I found it heavy handed and dull.

My favorite Coen Bros film.

These are examples of Alfred Hitchcock's opinion that a mediocre book can often be made into a great movie, while great books are much more difficult to handle as movies, given the limitations of the form.

Shin Godzilla, a 2016 Toho release. As Godzilla films go, it was a hoot. A few new wrinkles freshen up the old formula, and I'd rank it above the 2014 reboot. Definitely worthwhile for fans.

Quote from: Karl Henning on May 13, 2023, 02:49:30 PMFrank Darabont's The Mist. The first time I watched it, I thought very well of it, but also (given both its intensity and the emotional ending) felt I wouldn't need to watch it again for a while.  Now, you will have guessed, I figure that it's time.
And now, at last, Frank Darabont's The Green Mile. I find this extraordinary and wonderful, so, yes, I like it even better than The Shawshank Redemption.

Yesterday I saw Sicario.  A fabulous, nuanced film with complex characters and narrative.  Very dark, engaging, and heavy.

Directed by Marty Feldman, who also wrote the screenplay and acted (as Michael York's identical twin brother, Digby): The Last Remake of Beau Geste. Yes, good clean fun.

Is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels any good?  I'll never forget my dad watching this in the late 1980's dying laughing but as a teen, couldn't be interested to join in on the fun but it looks like it could be an enjoyable comedy.
