American Experience - Ulysses S. Grant, Warrior President (2002) - a PBS presentation in 2 parts lasting nearly 4 hours and an excellent introduction to this ambiguous American; graduate of West Point, a loving husband/father, a brilliant general (but claimed to be a butcher!), and an American President whose office was riddled w/ political problems; finally a brilliant writer of his memoirs to provide income to his family while dying from throat cancer (too many cigars etc.) - this is well done; could be twice as long and could have delved more deeply into this mysterious character -  ;D

What a surprisingly lovely little movie!

I had to take my son to see this movie.  It's a steaming pile of a movie if ever there were one.  (Okay, I did dig Medusa, but that's it.)  Worse yet, the trailers were for movies that must, by their nature, be worse - The A Team, Nightmare on Elm Street, Salt, and a monstrosity called Prince of Persia, with the very Persian looking Jake Gyllenhall.  What an awful summer at the movies.

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Karl - despite the length (nearly 4 hours), comes on 1 DVD, so a cheap Netflix rental for a trial viewing - quite well done!  Dave  :D

Story of two Danish resistance fighters, compellingly told with fine acting and photography, not much sentimentality but not much depth, either.  What's to be said about killing Nazis, except that they're everyone's favorite villains.

Them (1954) w/ Edmund Gween, James Whitmore, James Arness, & Joan Weldon - new release so hopefully re-mastered - looks great so far for a B&W '50s flick - I grew up as a boy watching these 1950s 'Sci-Fi' films - YES, primitive specials but for a youngster, still pretty impressive - so, my reaction is still as a youngster - still love this film (along w/ many others from this era!) -  ;D

I've added Dave's Once to my Netflix queue, too . . . .

What an awful summer at the movies.

I'm looking forward to Inception, and I might see Robin Hood if it receives good reviews but other than that yep it's going to be a dull time in the theater. :-\

Beautiful RE:  Tous de Matins du Monde

Harry - we enjoyed that film, also - even bought some more Marais CDs!  :D

GĂ©rard Depardieu's son, Guillaume, played the young Marais; only learned later that the son died after prolonged infections and a leg amputation in 2008 at the age of 37 y/o!  :-\

A late at night feel good movie, presented by the Dutch telly because it was 40 years ago today, that Sgt. McCartney split the band he played (in).
Name of the film: The Beatles: the first US Visit.
I enjoyed it immensely!

Will they ever get back together? ::)

Bits of The Mummy with Boris Karloff yesterday evening.  Should really watch the whole thing.

Was it too frightening Karl?

You know, if it were done today, with all the cinematic tricks and the 'realistic' mindset, it would be thoroughly disgusting.  In 1932 techno, it's actually a little poetic.
