A bit off topic, but I have been getting this a lot these days, any idea what causes it or better yet, how i can fix it? This is a screen shot from a you tube video:

There are several problems with that picture George, you have to be specific...

I see that the image is overly cropped,
there is black crush,
compression artifacts around Carson Daly,
banding in the blue...

I am referring to the colored markings around most of the outside border and inside the person's silhouette. The colors change when I scroll up or down.

Here's a link to the video, can you guys tell me if it distorts on your computer too?

I don't see that, but it sounds like halos... which means that your sharpness is too high.

Does it look like this?

If it does then I'm right if not... well some setting still needs to be changed on your monitor.

I still have nothing on that artifact-- but the song is awesome isn't it? ;D

No, it doesn't look like that. Did you check out the original youtube I linked to above?

I've seen through that point and nothing.  If I can't see it but you can it is a strong indicator that there is a problem with your display, or a setting for that display. :-\

Do you see this problem alot?  Or was it only that video?

I see it a lot, but on youtube only. I watch tons of stuff on my computer via VLC and never have a problem with video quality. I also watch streaming video on other sites and never have the problem I get with youtube. The artifacts only show up on youtube and only in solid black portions of the image.

Philoctetes

Johnny Guitar: Probably the best color I've ever seen in a film, and it also had great direction, but not much beyond that.

Angela: This movie could have been utterly fantastic, but it just didn't seem to want to pull it off. It did have some scenes that were supposed to be provocative, but... they really weren't. It also idealized the ending. It could have been a perfect ending, but it had to be 'American', sadly.

Wait!  I think I know what you're talking about! :D  Maybe...

Change the orientation of your screen.  You're looking a bit off axis, and it shifts the color and contrast, most notable on black and as you scroll down or up the image moves closer/further away from being on axis and it shifts.  It looks like a funky rainbow effect.

What do you think, is that it?

It might be. What I am taking about is not subtle at all. It's like digitized rainbow thingees superimposed on top of the streaming video (and some images too.)

Yeah that sounds like it then.  Solution is change the orientation of your monitor until it goes away or at least minimize it.  PC monitors use tn panels that have poor off axis behavior, but are (a) cheap and (b) have very fast response times.

If you want to throw money at the problem, IPS panel displays will not suffer this problem at all.

If by orientation you mean angle the monitor forward or backward, towards me, that actually doesn't change anything.

How long has this been going on?  Your monitor might have a faulty board.  This sounds like a big issue man.  I hope it's not a laptop screen.

Been going on a number of months, not sure exactly how long.

I don't think it's the monitor, for all images/movies/videos/streaming stuff plays perfect. It only happens on youtube.

But I thought you just said that you're seeing it everywhere including images? What you're saying doesn't make any sense, there is something missing.

There is a problem with youtube-- then why haven't millions of people complained?  I don't see any problem like what you're describing.
There is a problem with your display-- but you say that everything else looks fine.

Did you sign up for the html5 version of youtube?  I mean what else is there?  It's not vlc, I just tried it it plays with no problems like what you're describing.
