Great writing!

(Seriously, I love this just for demonstrating that it is not necessary to go to the prequels for copious examples of Lucas's flummery.)

And for the record, sins were removed because of a change which was Sir Alec Guinness's idea: his insistence that his character be killed off.

Fair disclosure:  I've not actually watched it, yet.

Quote from: Woody AllenNobody came to see A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982). One of the critics who likes my work very much said that it was the only trivial picture that I ever made. Richard Schickel from Time Magazine. But I wanted it to be light. I just wanted it to be a small intermezzo with a few laughs. I don't say this was any great picture at all, but in general this atmosphere is something that nobody cares about here in the United States. For me it was fine. I had a great time doing it. I wanted to do for the country what I'd done for New York in Manhattan (1979). I wanted to show it in all its beauty . . . I thought it was good when I wrote it, and I thought it was good when I made it. But it was not appreciated at all. This one and September (1987) are my two biggest financial disasters".

Interesting (albeit brief) review of Stardust Memories in which the critic concludes, I was wrong then: it's a classic.

Because the Blu-ray discs had come in: A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy(a light touch, yes, perhaps a mere pastoral, but winning, I think) and Stardust Memories (it's a recapitulation of laughs, watching the names of the characters roll by in the closing credits ... this is the third time I've watched it this twelvemonth, and there are a number of wonderful touches I saw, or perceived, for the first time only tonight).

Everybody Wants Some!!  Richard Linklater's breezy flick follows a group of baseball players at a small Texas college during the weekend before fall classes begin in the Year of our Lord 1980.  There are plenty of parties with copious quantities of booze, pot, and girls; gobs of snazzy, tight, high-waisted jeans and short shorts and fluffy hair; silly locker room shenanigans; and even a moment of deep philosophical reflection accompanied by Pink Floyd and a double chambered bong.  The central-ish character meets a girl he actually likes, who likes him back, and the most charming part of the movie is their burgeoning relationship, filled with college age conversational piffle about hopes and dreams and such forth.  (Linklater has this stuff down cold.)  The whirlwind romance ends early the morning of the first day of school, which finds our hero dozing off in his first class.  Film making basics are all just right for the subject matter, and there's not even one special effect in this real-life sized film.  The soundtrack is pitch perfect.  (Pun intended.)  Good for one enjoyable viewing.

Karl - own and enjoy both of the above films - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake of the film below Bedtime Story (1964) w/ Brando, Niven, & Shirley Jones - don't have that one in my collection and the reviews are quite mixed, but seeing Marlon in a comedic role is fun - probably need to look for that on the TCM channel.  Dave :)

Cheers, Dave!  I had not seen the Scoundrels in an age, and while I have seen bits of the Redemption forever, this was at last the first time that I have seen it entire.  Both of them titles I am very happy to own  8)

If that is the one about when he was in prison with "Morgan Freeman" I saw it but only on TV and it put me in a dark place for 2 - 3 weeks I have never been effected like that before.

Quote from: André on January 02, 2017, 04:31:38 PMThanks, Milos ! Last year in Cannes there was a buzz over Toni Erdmann.

I kinda liked it.. it is too long but the 'payoff' in the final twenty minutes or so is worth it, I think. Very cathartic.

Also saw La La Land recently, lovely movie. Nothing groundbreaking about it and I'd like to get more emotionally involved with the characters, but it has a good heart and the songs are memorable and fun.

Jason Bourne

Enjoyed this more than some others seem to have, even if it added nothing much to the larger Bourne story and was just a succession of chases and fights. Especially liked Alicia Vikander as the laser-focused analyst, and the depiction of a frightening leap forward in surveillance technology. On the minus side Tommy Lee Jones was wasted as a typical amoral agency man and Vincent Cassell plays exactly the same henchman he plays interchangeably in half his filmography. Worst of all was the idiotic decisions made regarding Julia Stiles' long-standing recurring character.

So the other day I watched Starship Troopers.  My only question for now is . . . Rasczak is shown a soldier whose brain has been sucked out (sorry if that's a spoiler), so that means that the Brain Bug had visited that outpost, right?
