Also a highly recommended movie!

Thought that I had seen nearly all of Veronica Lake's films, but do not remember watching The Glass Key - have always liked Alan Ladd in these early roles - available for sale on Amazon & TCM, but $18 so will not be a purchase - will keep an eye on the TCM schedule and hope for an appearance (not being streamed on Amazon).  Thanks all for the recommendation - Dave :)

Revenge (2017)

A stylishly filmed and very bloody exploitation film.

Two films noir

Out Of The Past
Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Jane Greer, 1947
Directed by Jacques Tourneur

Seen this one before of course. One of the classic noirs. Full 10/10.

The Outfit
Robert Duvall, 1973

Jane Greer has a bit part, as do several staples of noir: Marie Windsor, Elisha Cook, Robert Ryan.
One of several movies based on Richard Stark 's Parker novels, and one of the best. The weak link is Duvall. Contrast to the echt Parker, Lee Marvin in Point Blank. Still a tidy little thriller. 7/10

Our Brand is Crisis

I enjoyed this film about the background of a presidential election. Set in Bolivia it is more about how the campaign is fought and won as opposed to the economic and social issues at stake - a universal theme, irrespective of place. The intrigues of the various "handlers/advisors" are very watchable and revealing.

with typical Broadway "chatter a bunch of words for plot and character development on one note" stiltedness - and predictable

I think at least some of the dialogue was from the historical correspondence. When I read Ron Chernow's biography of Washington, I had to smile when I came across one of the dispatches read in the film.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri.  A much lauded flick, yet as I watched, I really didn't care at all about any of the main characters since they are all ultimately unlikable and unrealistic, or at least decidedly unlike real people I've met in real life.  The movie looks good and the main actors all do good work, but I expected much more.  Meh.

Blockers.  A more or less routine, vulgar sex comedy, though this time it's about young girls who want to get laid.  (How very shocking!)  And yes, their parents want to stop the shenanigans.  Formulaic, but decent enough for one viewing.  Such films rely on decent gags and game actors, and here John Cena offers the most laughs, as he did in one of Amy Schumer's mediocrities.  Also, the always lovely Leslie Mann lightens up on the bitch shtick, to good effect.

I've seen something of a backlash against this one, with a number of reviewers having similar views to yours. Nice acting, shame about the story.

Nights in Rodanthe

A wonderful human story [with an excellent performance from Diane Lane] of how two mature adults come together and form a relationship. Well worth a watch.

Agreed.  I like Diane Lane in just about anything.

Postcards from the Edge

The highlight of this entire film is the vocal performance of Streep at the very conclusion. Otherwise it is far from recommendable. With two such strong actresses it could have been so much better.

The Confessions Of Thomas Quick

A good documentary on the case of the man in Sweden who was convicted of 8 murders, and confessed to 39, none of which he committed. It's an excellent example of the kind of thing "repressed memory" therapy can lead to, and the general bogosity of such stuff. Recommended.

I've not watched the 1960 film for a while but likely agree w/ your comments - as I recall one of the best parts of the pic was looking at Yvette Minieux - don't believe that I liked the 2002 're-make' w/ Guy Pearce, and remember the same feeling, i.e. starts out well then just bogs down mostly w/ excessive graphics as I recall.  Dave

First Man (2018) w/ Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, and many others - Gosling as Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon - on the BIG screen yesterday; short synopsis below - ratings: 7.7/10, IMDB; 88%, Rotten Tomatoes (62%, viewers); 4.1/5, Amazon - Gosling plays Armstrong as a stoic and often unemotional character always staring up at the moon, perhaps true (have not read the book nor much about him); Foy plays a suffering wife wanting her husband more involved w/ family and earth-bound affairs - these portrayals can detract from the amazing story, i.e. landing a man on the moon less than 70 years after the Wright Brother's flight on the NC Outer Banks.  The moonscape scenes are amazing on a big screen - a major controversy is the absence of Armstrong planting the American flag on the lunar surface (2nd pic below) - for those interested, more HERE.  Film is recommended and I'd do a 4/5 rating on Amazon.  Dave :)

QuoteOn the heels of their six-time Academy Award®-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar®-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures' First Man, the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

The only reason I even know about this film at this point is because of the reaction to the fuss. Such as: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/10/first-man-neil-armstrong-patriotic-ryan-gosling/572818/

Actually, this response is even better. https://www.thedailybeast.com/ignore-the-trumpster-idiots-first-man-is-the-most-nakedly-patriotic-movie-of-the-year
