Last film I watched:

A classic to put it simply.

A ken Loach marathon at a friend's place today:

Land And Freedom watched twice - first the film then immediately followed by the commentary

Then Cathy Come Home - as remarkable and strong as I'd heard, a real punch in the stomach

Well, all right, I watched The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension again last night.

Tora, Tora, Tora!

A dual Japan-US production about Pearl Harbor. I found it a bit static.

That is how I seem to remember it.

Tora! Tora! Tora! - one my favorite Pearl Harbor war films, along w/ From Here to Eternity - but I can understand the mixed 'emotions' about this production - quoted below a short paragraph outlining the oft differing points of views (Source); recently, I replaced my DVD version w/ the blu-ray restoration which is spectacular (reviews shown below from the same source).  Dave :)

QuoteTora! Tora! Tora! has always had a mixed reputation. Film critics—at the time of its release and since—have typically viewed it as a large- scale snooze-inducer, a dramatically stilted bore that favors historical authenticity over a compelling story. There's definitely some truth to this. The film lacks what you might call an emotional core, preferring to present the events in a detached, matter-of-fact, almost documentary-like way. On the other hand, war buffs and naval battle nerds tend to love it precisely because of the faithful research that went into the film, which took three years to plan and cost a then-astronomical sum of $25 million to produce. Both sides have differing and equally legitimate opinions, but there's one thing nearly everyone can agree upon—Tora! Tora! Tora! is far better than Michael Bay's treacly, heart-thumpingly patriotic version of the story, 2001's over-sensationalized Pearl Harbor. There are no soppy love triangles in this big-budget docudrama.

I will be watching it for the first time next weekend, Karl.  It is the dvd that is making its rounds at my work.

Me too. Another 25 years and I might be able to face another viewing.

Last night: Matrix Reloaded....

The fight sequences in this one improve on the first movie even - its been much imitated ever since I guess :)

I don't remember if I ever saw the third Matrix movie - is it as bad (or worse) as people say it is? I liked fine the first two with the exception of the character of Trinity and Neo's miraculous coming back to life (even though it's absolutely hilarious how the two Agent Smiths scram the instantly this happens). I am bit annoyed by how many people seem to think the movie was revolutionary in "introducing" the concept of "fake reality", even though it goes as far back in history as Plato, I think. Maybe even further.

I liked the first Matrix movie a lot, for what it is, it just kicked ass on all levels.

I have not seen the sequels because everyone I know says they are total shit and wreck what the 1st film established so well.

Enjoyed The Matrix and own on blu-ray - watch about once a year; also streamed the two sequels on Amazon - the specials in the second were quite good as I recall, but were really overdone in the third film in the series - did not buy either follow-up film.  Dave :)

Absolutely.

The Matrix series gets progressively worse, though the first one was great. The third one I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Eye in the Sky

Alan Rickman's last movie, an excellent drama about a drone strike.

SimonNZ

I've got Eye In The Sky lined up to watch tonight. Glad to hear you rate it well.

Been recently getting through season two of Better Call Saul
