Mister Sharpe

"David Golder" from Criterion's Eclipse series, an uncompromising look at the emotions of business and the business of emotion. Duvivier's 1930 sound debut was sumptuously and often pointedly shot, a neglected near-masterpiece that bears thematic comparison to Citizen Kane. Based on Irene Nemirov's novel of the same name.
"Don't adhere pedantically to metronomic time...," one of 20 conducting rules posted at L'École Monteux summer school.

Next up on the David Gulpilil hit parade will be the '70s Ozploitation trashterpiece Mad Dog Morgan starring Dennis Hopper. The production had a few kinks as Gulpilil went on a walkabout and they had to send a tracker after him. When he returned he said the spirits or whatever told him Hopper was crazy and the director replied "I could have told you that".

Sully (2016) w/ Tom Hanks et al; Clint Eastwood, director - seen on an IMAX screen today - Susan & I both enjoyed, although the reviews have been variable - the story is well known (2009 'landing' of a USAir jet on the Hudson River w/ survival of all 155 passengers & crew) - the specials are excellent - highly recommended.

Iron Giant, The (1999) - just replaced my DVD w/ the BD - excellent visuals and sound - ratings below from HERE - if a fan of this animated film, then a blu-ray purchase is a MUST!  :)  Dave

This week:

Fassbinder: Berlin Alexanderplatz - After parts 1-3, terrific. The sheer scope (15+ hours) is a little daunting (first time seeing it), but I love the director, and haven't seen any of his films in awhile.

Just finished the cycle, and while I won't give any spoilers, this is pretty monumental. ("Olympian," said someone on the way out.) And after 13 hours of the movie proper comes the 2-hour Epilogue, which is almost indescribable. Quite an achievement.

When I am back to my senses, I do want to read the Alfred Döblin novel.

A wonderful performance from Devos.

Last night for the first time, Chimes at Midnight itself.  Wonderful, utterly wonderful.  And in a personal parenthesis, I enjoy the counterpoint between this take on certain passages/themes, and that of the Branagh Henry V.

The Whales of August. Every bit as charming as Cato suggested. And I do like a wicked good movie about Maine in the summer.

"Why do so many of us try to explain the beauty of music thus depriving it of its mystery?" Leonard Bernstein. (Wait a minute!! Didn't Bernstein spend most of his life doing exactly that???)

A nasty little movie! I have the book on my coffee table, part of an anthology I just read a couple books from, and am considering reading it.

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Just a bad movie with unresolved, glaring plot problems. Like so many other films being released these days.

Captain America: Civil War
2016 ‧ Fantasy/Science fiction film ‧ 2h 27m

Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.

Bill - know that you're a fan of The Iron Giant - therefore, the BD is a MUST purchase for you!

Last night another new BD addition to my collection:

The Vikings (1958) w/ Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, & Ernest Borgnine (as the Viking papa!) - ratings for the blu-ray restoration shown below - some of the scenes of the Viking boats coming up the fjords are just spectacular, and Tony & Janet make a great 'pair' - ;)  Dave
