The playing here is about as different from that of Menuhin's recording (which is also indispensible!) as can be imagined, but equally beautiful and astounding!

If you really dislike Bach you keep quiet about it! - Andras Schiff

For Prokofiev 3

Nonsense. The work belongs to Argerich. Hers are the only legendary ones.

The Pogorelich from '80 or '81 has all the speed and an even stronger approach IMO.

Kapell and Janis, both are superb. But legendary? Come on. Like most of the recordings in this thread, they're excellent but not even approaching a fabled quality. Whoever said Grumiaux (and Milstein) for the Bach S&Ps is on the money though.

Despite sonic flaws and all, I'd take Prokofiev/Coppola over all others I've heard. ;)

I think the composer himself performing counts as "legendary" ........

Minus the Mehta Mahler 2nd, I am inclined to agree. Legendary! :D

Judging from this thread till now: as long it's by the Beaux Arts Trio, Herbert von Karajan, Sviatoslav Richter or on the EMI GROC series..... ::)  ;D

Guess it depends on (like all things in classical music) one's interpretation, Que. You have to remember that many people will feel subtly differently about the word 'legendary'. ;D

I know, Mark, I know... Just fooling around a bit... :) (Or making exactly the same point...  ;))
As for personal preferences - I refrained from posting each and every recording by Solomon (the pianist).
Maybe I'd just might as well..  8)
