Ok.

Ah Ha !!  :D

Thanks, Manuel. My idea was to make a nice 70 minutes disc of these two unusual transcriptions/arrangements.

# 39, The Lachenmann, maybe? I'd pair it with Schreiben.

And I'd make a disc of 20th Century Italian music out of # 23-26 and 53.  :)

Thanks, Manuel. I wouldnt have thought of the Lachenmann, but someone let a link to Schreiben around and I picked it up. I'll find out if "the thing" deserves to be heard ;)

Could I petition you to upload the Manzoni and Henze works? ;D Whenever it suits you, of course. Soy su obligado... :D

Rolf has some very interesting downloads this week:

from an lp there's the Mischa Elman Mendelssohn VC (with the Chicago symphony under the Belgian, Désiré De Fauw (former MD here in Montreal long before I was born),

and esp. Mozart 25 under Walter (1952, presumably with the NYP)

not edward

Lachenmann's pretty extreme as contemporary music goes, but I have a rather soft spot for his music (though it typically doesn't translate well to home listening due to the intensely theatrical nature of much of it). One thing that's worth remembering when trying to get the hang of some of his pieces is that he often seems to be building structures typical of the German symphonic tradition using musical material that ought to be totally unsuited for the task. (Also, in some pieces, such as Schreiben, I think his love of Bruckner's symphonies is never too far off.)

I got to meet him briefly when he was in Toronto for some concerts about three years back: an interesting guy, though some might find his politico-aesthetic views rather offputting.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

I have already packed the Manzoni, so they are ready to be dispatched. What happens is that local telecom firms offered cheap ADSL subscriptions, but they don't make the corresponding investment. The results is that the users are more than what the infrastructure supports, and when I connect my pc to the internet I should get a sign that read "Welcome to the diminishing returns of capital".
The very good upload speed I had three weeks ago is gone. However, I'll try to upload the files soon.

Manuel, we are forever in your debt! :-*

I have two versions of the Mendelssohn played by Elman, and that's one of them. I coupled one with Brahms' third violin sonata, and the other with a weird live Tchaikovsky vc. (One of the Mendelssohns is live also).

Manuel, may I have the Goebbels please?

Whoever has heard the music of Donatoni: apart from the guitar music (I have some of that, and very good it is), how about his orchestral works??

If that's an indirect request, you should know the Goebbels is first.  ::)

Sorry, I don't get it  ???

That I'm uploading the Donatoni, but after Goebbels and Henze.

Lilas Pastia

Ah! Now I get it  ::).  I thought there was a deeper meaning to it ;D.

But mine was not an indirect request (re: Donatoni): I really would like to know if anyone knows this composer and has heard other stuff by him ? THEN I might make a formal plea for a download ;D

Here's a reverse of the usual form: does anyone have anything by the tenor Giacomo Aragall???? The man has a live La Boheme with Carlos Kleiber, now impossibly out of print, a recital CD of Verdi and Puccini, also long gone, and in the 1970s and 1980s was apparently a fairly regular fixture of the global concert circuit. I recently stumbled onto him on YouTube (Che gelida manina beginning at 1:20, Recondita armonia) and am absolutely transfixed every time I hear his voice. I had never thought I'd hear someone I'd love so much more than Pavarotti...

He has a tiny handful of commercial recordings still available - La Traviata with Maazel, a live recital disc, Madame Butterfly on LaserLight, and a couple Naxos discs. Does anybody have anything else by this extraordinary tenor? I would be eternally in your debt, even if you knew of a place where I could purchase his "Boheme"...
