Just because you are meeting him does not mean you have to ask him anything. I don't dislike him, and consider him to be very talented and have enjoyed at least one of his recitals. I did meet him afterwards. But to be perfectly honest, I did not and still do not have anything I am compelled to ask him at all. (Partly because I did not expect any intelligent and enlightening replies. ) On the other hand, I asked several questions to Nojima after his recital and his replies were very enlightening.

How about these?

Looks like pajamas.

Or who the heck did his hair? Looks like someone beat him over the head with an ugly stick.

Perhaps he was going for the "Beethoven" look? perhaps that's the style of clothing back in his days?

yeah, i would actually take the same approach, I mean, what should I ask? I probably ask (if i ever meet him) how was his day, or about his family or something, I would definitely stay away from musical questions.

Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

PS, I just found this recent review of Lang Lang doing Tippett's Piano Concerto (1955), a piece I don't know at all, with Colin Davis and the LSO.

For this choice of repertory, my opinion of Lang Lang has just shot up considerably.

It's a great piece, and I'm glad that a high-profile pianist (regardless of his merits) is doing it. Lang Lang's also recently done Bartok 2 with Boulez, so perhaps he's starting to think of ways out of the rut he seems to have dug himself into.

OT, but has anyone heard Steven Osborne's disc of the complete Tippett piano music (both with and without orchestra)?
