Well, of course the Americans Mike mentioned would have been a good deal dumber than usual, if they asked about the ocean from a bridge in Vienna.

No.  It's Venice.  I was thinking of all that beautiful seascape you can see from Vienna and the tight little roads of Venice put me off.  The leaning tower of Vienna is a favourite memory of mine, and if you ever go to Venice, take in Times Square and Broadway.  Now then...where did I put that World Atlas..?  :-\

This talk of bridges in Vienna reminds me of the following story-

As you know, the Ecole Nationale d'Administration is one of the most prestigious(if not the most prestigious) of French schools.
The graduates-enarques-are almost guaranteed admission to and probable fast-tracking within the higher reaches of the French civil service. Enarques-in particular those who became involved in French national politics-have or used to have a reputation for tremendous intellectual self-confidence(=arrogance).

On one occasion an excessively clever young applicant for a place in the school was at interview displaying quite astonishing intellectual brilliance and equally annoying arrogant self-confidence. Every question thrown at him by the increasingly exasperated professors on the interviewing panel was answered correctly, instantly and with haughty disdain.

Finally, a particularly annoyed professor snarled at the candidate-"Very well, young man, if you are so very clever...What is the depth of the Danube in Vienna?"

To which the young candidate replied at a shot..."Under which bridge?"

Actually, although I don't care for it much itself, Haggis is not nearly as bad as it sounds :) It is just that it is usually mixed with onions(a vegetable I detest and abominate). Without onions, and combined, for example, with chicken it can be quite tasty.

  I too was disappointed to see Lis leave  :(.  A dearth of opera lovers was one reason quoted.  Perhpas we need more opera fans at GMG but I'm (marvinbrown   8)) here and so is Sarge  8), Tsaraslondon  8), Wendell_E  8), PerfectWagnerite  8), Bruce  8), Mike   8) etc. etc.  Well I can not really speak on behalf of the others but opera is my favorite genre.  I really hope Lis returns and contribute to the opera threads as she once did.  I wish her the best!

I have never had Haggis infested with Onions.  I can't stand those clarty stinking vegetables either - if there was an onion in sight with Haggis or worse, inside a Haggis, I would run a mile.  Onions stink, they are howling, and it seems they're in everything these days.
