So start your own ***king forum. It ain't that hard. If we were all meeting face to face and someone continually acted like a jerk, believe me, he would eventually be knocked down or kicked out.

Wrong. Based on the evidence of this forum, if we were all meeting face-to-face and someone continually acted like a jerk, the police would be curious to know the reason for the unexplained group suicide

You must be joking.  Do you honestly believe this?  ::)

Heh.

And please remember, folks. The banner across the top of the GMG home page says:

A Beginner's Guide to Classical Music, Composers and CDs

If scarpia is expecting any sort of debate from beginners, I can see why he'd be disappointed. What would a beginner do when he or she got ass-raped at the first attempt to join in a discussion? Why, golly, I think that person might leave the forum.

He said poppycock!

The new forum could be called Classical for Cads!

"Jerk apprehended for instigating unexplained group suicide"

I see a few people here who are intentionally looking past the actual reason for the banning. This was the constant stream of verbal abuse that was showered over members who were in disagreement with M's personal POV. The fact that there was disagreement is NOT the issue. We welcome disagreement, it is what makes life worth living from an intellectual standpoint. To say that this was the issue is to completely miss the point.

And let's also take a moment to discuss the idea that a classical music forum should be a Darwinian anarchy. I interpret some of these statements to be saying that only people who have whatever strength of character is needed to withstand a full-scale verbal assault have earned the privilege of getting their opinions heard. This is complete and total bullshit. Anyone who joins this forum, reads, listens and thinks is allowed to express his/her opinion. That opinion can and should be justifiable, but not to the point where unrestrained aggression ensues, not only there, but in every thread that the person subsequently posts in.

So, it is time to make choices. It is made clear from the outset that this is a moderated board. There are unmoderated places out in the Internet wilderness. If you are one who believes that these are the only places worth posting on, then by all means, do what you have to do. But we will make every effort to maintain some form of civility here, or else this place will be gone and then we can all migrate to other places that are more copecetic to us.

Quite honestly, I was closer to M than any of the other mods were, I shared a lot of his views, and even had a friendly relationship with him. I am sorry that it came to this, my goal for the last year and a half since he has been back was to try to channel his interests into helping people to get smarter rather than into crushing them. I failed at that in the long run, although I think he was better in the last 6 months than he had been previously. I wish him well, and I hope that one day he will be able to come back and enliven our discussions as he is so capable of doing.

Won't stop some from whingeing in sympathetic mourning for M's willful self-implosion;  but at least Gurn has voiced reason.

I don't see any reason to be mad or upset. People here come and go as they wish, and AFAIK banning has been exercised with parcimony. M had been banned before, and was allowed to return. Obviously for that second run it was his call, and his choice of words and attitude were what did him in.

I don't see any reason either to feel aggravated by the so-called passive-aggressive and Woe is me attitude of some members (meaning Harry, but for some reason he won't be named by those who feel so upset by his ways). This is one of the strangest confections I've seen here. I just don't understand it. Harry -or Karl, or myself - can easily be ignored. M could not be ignored: he clamoured for attention. Unfortunately he did it by regularly reducing others to pulp. I, too, wish him well and hope he can contribute positively wherever he chooses to settle.

Edit: it's now 7 + 2 + 5. Wow !

Unless you're claiming that M had a way of disabling your scroll bar, I don't see what made him impossible to ignore.  I found myself in his sights a few times, I found his arguments sometimes uncomfortably compelling, even after ignoring the verbal bile he seasoned them with.
