Excellent so far. The opening measures of Concerto for Flute, Violin, and Orchestra reminded me of Villa-Lobos with those string syncopations.

PROKOFIEV:    "Betrothal in a Monastery", opera

One of the most inspired comic operas of the 20th century, based on Sheridan's "The Dueña". With a superb theatrical dynamic and a subtle orchestration this opera, as Shostakovitch said, reminds Falstaff.

The interpretation is splendid, as a team work, with a good direction of Jurowski.

The new erato

From last nights listening:

Last volume in this series. I do not understand the criticisms levelled by somebody at these recordings, which have been brilliant from day one. And so this is as well, containing the wellknown Apollo e Dafne (La terra è liberata) [HWV 122] (and which I have at least in a couple of other versions), as well as two relatively unfamiliar (and unknown to me) gems, Agrippina condotta a morire (Dunque sarà pur vero) [HWV 110] and Cuopre tal volta il cielo [HWV 98]. Particularly the last one, for bass, is a revelation.

The new erato

Completing my first time playthrough of this 4 disc set with disc 4.  Consisting of Polonaises and some single pieces in various form, I found this stuff more trivial and less bound to fire the imagination than mye remembrance of music from the previous 3 discs (it's been a few months though).

The new erato

This is a very fine disc. Glorious sound and fine playing. The two tone poems are imaginative and very tuneful, admirers of Strauss and Reger beware! The violin concerto is more variable, but contains a really beatiful slow movement that should be heard by lovers of romantic concertoes not obsessed with virtuosic fireworks.

Just played this one, again....what a wonderful disc this is.

If you listen to incessant amounts of Fasch, does that make you a Faschist?

The new erato

And what about me, that listen to Fux a lot?

And I gentlemen prefer blondes, ehhhh Frescobaldi, to be precise "Messa della Domenica" performed to perfection by Canticum Lorenzo Ghielmi. I really like this performance. Disc 20 from this box.

This seemed like just the sour mood buster for me today - Edward German's Symphony No.2 (and Symphonic Suite and Rhapsody). Splendid stuff!
