Try this Seventh, Keemun:

The critics seemed lukewarm in their responses to it, but I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I have many Sevenths on download (including this one), but I think I may buy the CD of this performance, so highly do I rate it. :)

Thanks for the recommendation, Mark.  I saw it on eMusic, but passed it up.  I've added it to my list to download.   ;D

Vol.2. was not as immediately accessible as Vol.1. but still excellent and a disc that I'm sure will reveal more depth with further listens.  :)

i had the opposite reaction, and generally feel that vol2 has the two better PCs. Demidenko really cranks up the power too.

The cadenza of the Vieuxtemps 5 once moved me to tears (violinist Misha Keylin).

Tonight was Nordic Night, after spending all afternoon at the school's chamber music festival (see the concert thread). My listening:

The Inextinguishable Nielsen 4
Michael Schonwandt leads the Danish Radio Symphony

Sibelius Second Symphony
Adrian Leaper leads the Slovak Philharmonic

Are these worth a try? I'm interested but afraid it might be just for those that "get off" on virtuoso violinists.

If it was good enough for Heifetz...

For those interested: Nézet-Séguin will be in Birmingham next January. He'll conduct the CBSO in Bruckner's 9th. He conducted that work in Montreal a month ago and it was awe inspiring 0:)

In the week ending Saturday, NOV 17, 2007, I listened to so little I am not going to do a complete report this week. Next week, I will submit a report for the fortnight.

But I will give a brief idea of what I have listened to. I listened to a hanssler CBE disc of Bach Cantatas, the first 2 of 5 discs in the Danel Quartet set of the Shostakovich string quartets (a generally disappointing 2 discs, considering the cartwheels some have turned over them, and 1 1/2 CDs of Schumann piano music by Earl Wild, also rather disappointing, so far. He is a virtuoso with formidable technique, but no real sense of subltety, it seems to me.

See you next week.

Excellent, and a rare treat because of the lute-harpsichord (Lautenwerck).
Thanks, Premont, for the recommendation! :)

That's a phenomenally recorded release, the title piece sounds amazingly clear versus the Hyperion disc I have including it. I previously preferred the slightly faster Taverner Consort recording (Virgin) before hearing the Naxos, but this disc makes a great case for a slower performance.

I always listen to that Tallis CD on headphones, and am always gobsmacked by the clarity and detail of it, and the clear separation of the voices...just sheer bliss  :D ..will have to check out the Taverner one at some stage.

Kodaly, Concerto for Orchestra

Don't expect something on the level of the Bartok work and you should greatly enjoy this fine and unjustly neglected Kodaly work.  There was also a fabulous Ormandy recording on Lp.
