Thanks for the warm welcome, Karl.  I don't mean to put you on the spot immediately but I notice that you play clarinet.  What is your opinion of Sabine Meyer as a clarinetist?  I bought this CD recently but my general unfamiliarity with the works and the instrument precluded me from making any judgment.

Hey, Stuart - It's me, Jay. Welcome.

I just got Simon Rattle's Mahler 8 after reading a great review of it (can't remember where). This is only my second listen.

She's perhaps not a traditional beauty, but Mullova is beauty nonetheless, eh Stuart!

Mullova is a wonderful violinist.  Modern violin can sound good too, though many of us have been brain-washed into believing only period instruments sound good.  Before the period instrument movement took off, there were Arthur Grumiaux and Henryk Szeryng, who were outstanding violinists.

I haven't heard much of her work. I was referring to her physical attributes.  ;D

Hi all, another friend of George's, and refugee from the apparently now defunct Hoffman Classical Corner here.  I don't listen to much radio normally, but I heard the start of this in the car and liked it so much I had to continue listening via the internet at home:

Dvořák Symphony No 9
Cleveland Orchestra
Franz-Welser Möst, conductor

A brand new recording from what the announcer described as this "veteran" orchestra.

Hello everybody,

I have this pretty delightful CD too ...  I cannot wait for the 6-CD set of Helene Grimaud to arrive ...

I agree about Mullova, but it seems reasonable to me that folks would use their own ears in deciding whether modern or period instruments sound good.

By the way, I created a thread over a year and a half ago to honor Richter.

Now it's 16 pages and growing:
