LUCIANO BERIO:        Canticum Novissimi Testamenti / A-Ronne

Composed in 1988, the Canticum seems a reference to the tradition of Italian Madrigal, from Marenzio to Monteverdi and, in special, Striggio, Banchieri e Vecchi. I need to listen to this work more times but, after the first audition it doesn't seem at the level of Coro or Sinfonia.

A-Ronne is a different case: I cannot consider this as music, not even bad music.

An interesting choice of geometric design for the border, juxtaposed with the series name. Yes, I am immature :)

Listening to butchered Mahler:

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

I hope they record the 5th soon, this series has been super-duper.

Fine performances affected for their horrible recorded sound (or their transference to CD, I don't exactly know).

Hopefully, the interpretations are not as meandering8)

Perhaps appropriately, I felt the performance to be sort of aimless. It was exciting, moment-to-moment, but slightly scrappy and I wasn't really sure what the overall plan was supposed to be. It's very opposed to someone like Klemperer, who while admittedly is stylistically a lightyear apart, is more musically convincing despite my having a taste for HIP in Beethoven.

The sound of the original LP´s wasn´t good at all. During a period of Beethoven saturation (which I BTW have overcome since long  :) ), I gave them to a friend.
I have not yet listened to the Brilliant CD release.

It's interesting to know it; this 3-CD set was licensed from Decca. Anyway, I do think currently there are better options for complete sets, especially Schroeder/Immerseel and Terakado/Vodenitcharov.  :)

Recently I acquired the Schröder / Immerseel, well -  it is still in the cellophane.

Terakado, isn´t he too self-effacing for Beethoven??
