I think of Grainger as a guilty pleasure because there's nothing really profound in his music --- it's just good melodic music that has a certain understated charm. I have heard In A Nutshell, but, again, it has been quite some time since I heard any of his music.

Yes, you must listen to the rest of that Debussy set, Daniel. I think you'll thoroughly enjoy Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras. These are usually the first works people hear of his music, so from here there's so many other places to explore.

Well, maybe I would say that of the folk settings, I suppose I could consider them as guilty pleasures. ;) Extremely charming pieces. But 'The Warriors' and 'In A Nutshell', I think have some really powerful, beautiful music. Ok, not the most incredibly profound music, but I would not consider these pieces as just guilty pleasure. Such great pieces! I'd be interested to hear your opinion on these two pieces in particular once you have listened again, John. Let us know! :)

I will! I have been wanting to for so long, my listening time is limited though... I'm lucky to get around 3 hours per week for proper listening, which is when I would want to listen to new recordings/pieces etc. Hoping for a good amount of time this weekend though! :) From what I have heard, I think I will enjoy the Villa-Lobos too. I look forward to it, thanks John! :)

Really happy to hear this, Karl! :)

Do you think you will listen to more Mahler now?

Well, I've certainly got this box I need to finish making my way through . . . .

Brilliant, Karl. The Bernstein set if I remember correctly? Excellent set, Bernstein is certainly hard to beat in Mahler! I hope you enjoy it all, Karl. Please do let us know. :)

Thanks for the recommendations of female composers,
I will try and get some of those recordings!

Now, listening to Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonics in Coplands Appalachian Spring.

Sounds good, Daniel. VL is in my top 5 favorite composers and continues to inspire me.

Something really lacking in my collection is work by female composers. Does anybody have any recommendations ?

Rooting for my fellow country(wo)man here but one can only wonder what this lady could've achieved if she didn't die so tragically young (she was only 25).

The Kapralova Society runs an extensive list of female composers, btw.

I'm sorry, what does it mean?

Again, it's too wonderful, Beethoven's Symphony No.7!

Yeah, especially the 9th symphony! ;)

Indeed...my desert island Ninth.

The only problem I have with the DG box selections is the Abbado Sixth. I wish they had chosen one of his Sevenths (Chicago or Berlin) instead and assigned the Sixth to Sinopoli.

I'm pretty sure I've not yet heard the Ninth in this box yet. I mean, I mustn't have, right? If I had, my world would have changed : )

Maybe I should have chosen the username "MadaboutKarajan".....

Do you own that white 30-disc box set? I own it but haven't listened lately.
