Prokofiev, Alexander Nevsky, Reiner/CSO

Another seldom-heard work, well worth revisiting. Big "thank yous" to the persistent Proky fans who keep this sensational composer on our collective radar!

Proky is the man, and Nevsky was one the first pieces of his I heard many years ago, much credit goes to it for grabbing my attention to his oeuvre. But I have yet to hear Reiner's there.

Two can play that game, David Ross!

To me he's one of the giants of 20th Century music, and of music throughout time. Aside from Bach and the Haydn-Mozart-Beethoven trinity, my favorite composers are all giants of the early 20th Century: Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Debussy, Sibelius, Mahler, and R. Strauss, to name the most prolific and inventive. Aside, perhaps, from Shosty and maybe RVW, have we seen their like since?

(Note, for those more inclined to disputation and accusation than to understanding and discourse: the exclusion of several other well-known and accomplished composers of the early 20th C from the list of "giants" above -- i.e. Elgar, Ravel, Schoenberg, Rachmaninoff, Janáček, Ives, Nielsen, et al -- does not imply that I neither know nor enjoy their music.)

Hrm, the pic works for me. :( But yes, it's the one from Mata. So far, so fantastic. Love the tuba!
