I've chatted with Michael at a couple Brucknerthons, where he would hold court on the deck.   A lot of the 'thon folks also post to rec.music.classical.recordings.

And I also had the pleasure to meet Tony (esodizy) quite some time ago, again in Athens.

Yeah that was nice, it's too bad we didn't have more time (the weather was lovely that December(!) afternoon).

I've also met Peregrine and Choo Choo, both in London.

Yes, the Brucknerthons at Ramon's house were always a lot of fun, a good opportunity to meet other collectors.

I've met with Bruce (bhodges) and George (but never the three of us IIRC::))  in NY multiple times. And I was sincerely happy to take our friendships with both of them beyond meeting up and chatting about classical music alone, although of course, with Bruce it is difficult to end or start up an evening without attending a concert together  ;D

The only person I have met from this forum is Iago.  His personality in person is very different from what he portrays here.  A real gentleman.  He has helped me immensely to learn non-operatic classical music and recommended good performances.  I really appreciate that.  I have also spoken to Springrite on the phone.

Why is this so common? One personality is hard enough for me to keep up.

He will be very upset when he reads that.

Yes, I remember talking to you. I did not realise this Anne is that Anne!

Don't worry, you hardly risk a similar fate.  ;)
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

That depends on which of his personalities is doing the reading.

The only person from GMG I have met is Larry Rinkel, who used to post here. A rather disagreeable, arrogant fellow, and the forum is well rid of him.

You met Larry?  Wow - I always quite liked the grumpy old codger, though, I must say. What's he like IRL?

Disagreable and arrogant.

Surprising... I'd love to have been a fly on the wall at that meeting, then!

Back when I was still living in the US of A, I met Larry several times. I did not find him "disagreeable and arrogant" at all.

Basically, he is a physically rather imposing fellow (& must be pushing 60 by now), but quite soft-spoken and polite. He is of course hugely knowledgeable about music, but interesting to talk to regardless of the subject.

It didn't last long. During dinner when he started insulting certain composers and performers, it became so unpleasant that I walked out (leaving my share of the bill, of course).

Further on the subject - during my time in the NJ/Phila. area (1999-2001) I was able to meet:

Barry Z. (no longer posts here; we lived in the same neighborhood briefly)
Joe Barron (at a group lunch)
Owlice (at the same lunch)
Karl Henzy (ditto - don't know if he ever posted here, but a very interesting guy anyway)
