Quote from: George on March 18, 2024, 10:27:09 AMYeah, they make it look like "we'll keep snowballing you with ads until you pay our monthly fee."

Well it worked for me.  I just couldn't take it.  It was either pay or stop watching youtube.  The latter is a serious possibility still...

Quote from: Brian on March 18, 2024, 09:57:08 AMYoutube seems to be deliberately making their ads more obnoxious. They used to have a little warning countdown ("Ads beginning in 5...4...") which they removed in favor of sudden abrupt transitions. And now they'll make you sit through 45+ seconds before allowing the "skip" option.

More than once I have been listening to a musical work and in the middle of a movement - out of nowhere - on comes an ad!  :o

Bad enough, if the ads were placed between movements!

Continuing our alphabetical journey through our collection:

The Searchers - John Wayne, directed by John Ford, script by Frank Nugent from a novel by Alan Le May.

Great score by Max Steiner...except for the opening credits, where a dramatic introduction (reminiscent of King Kong) is spoiled by a "segue" into a sappy song groaned by a cowboy chorus!  ::)  😇

The novel is still in print: of interest is that Le May also wrote The Unforgiven, which was made into a movie with Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, and Lilian Gish.  Highly recommended also!

"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

- Brian Aherne introducing Rosalind Russell in  My Sister Eileen (1942)

Godzilla Minus One and Poor things both watched at the same day. Both really good, both thought provoking, both enlightening.

Roasted Swan

Yesterday courtesy of Channel 4's free streaming service here in the UK;

Never seen before - didn't know what to expect except that it was "dark".  Christian Bale is genuinely excellent - the idea that someone can be driven to murder because he's jealous of a colleague's "better" business card is so absurd/comic that it takes a fine actor to make the idea both funny and somehow believable.  Of course by the end it is not completely clear if all the multiple murders are real or fgments of the main character's deeply disturbed imagination.  Not sure I'd seek it out again but pleased to have watched it this once...

Pohjolas Daughter

Thanks for the suggestion @drogulus regarding that series.

Haven't heard of Tubi before now, so thanks for mentioning it.

And, yes, Youtube's ads can drive you nuts!   >:(

Quote from: drogulus on March 18, 2024, 08:55:59 AMIf you liked Oppenheimer you might want to check out the series from 1980 starring Sam Waterston. David Suchet plays Teller. It's streaming on Tubi and Roku has it, too. The DVDs are insanely expensive.
What exactly is the series' title? My initial search last night only turned up a number of documentary films.

I inserted a wrong picture on the previous post. I watched Dunkirk by Nolan, not the BBC drama of the same title.

Boring and annoying. Quit watching in one hour. No idea why this movie is popular.

I didn't much enjoy it, either. I saw it through to the end because I was at a friend's place, and it was his choice. We're still friends, though. Might have made an all right short. Maybe.

Logan's Run. Long ago I saw not much of this on TV. Among other things, I never realized that Farrah Fawcett-Majors is in the cast. Certainly never realized that Geo. Clayton Johnson (a notable Twilight Zone contributor) co-authored the source novel. Peter Ustinov is great, of course. Worth watching, but I don't need to own it. I watched on Tubi.

I remember being greatly impressed by Ms Agutter's natural gifts in the theatre.  ;)

And the movie was fun, though the " Carousel " bit has always looked rather poor to me.

Logan's Run is just my type of thing! Not because it is a great movie (it is not), but because of how everything looks and feels. It is for me! The 70s did sci-fi so nicely! It is cosy! I have this movie on Blu-ray (a triple feature with The Omega Man and Soylent Green, both starring Charles Heston). I also liked the Logan's Run TV show, unfortunately not available on physical media.
