Maybe a year or so ago, l stumbled upon one of the more recent forms of social media, the reaction video.
Iirc, l was looking for clips from Airplane!, my favorite comedy. I had been idling along on YouTube when l decided l wanted just a little bit, one gag from the film.
So l naturally type in the search box, click and up comes someone reacting to the film.
Maybe it's old news to most folks, but it was a surprise to me. The concept seemed a bit weird at first, but after some initial explorations l started to appreciate some of the reactors out there.
A year later, my favorite is " Cassie ", whom you'll find on her Popcorn in Bed channel.
Anyone else into reaction videos?

Several months ago, I stumbled across a couple of ones of some young ones reacting to music that they had heard for the first time (suggested to them by either friends or followers of their channels). Kind of fun to see what they thought of them. They were listening to (or watching old concert videos) of some classic rock/artists. I did also watch a couple of other ones: one was of a professional flautist/teacher watching a Tull video (which, if I'm recalling correctly, I.A. was self-taught...which also explained some of his "different" fingering/techniques).
I hadn't heard of "reaction videos" before then.
PD
Great thread idea! $:)
I am myself HOOKED on movie reaction videos! As a Star Wars fan (before the dark times of Disney) I am especially into "millenials" watching Star Wars movies 1-6 for the first time. Reactions to horror movies are also fun. Some people are just TERRIFIED by movies I consider myself only mildly scary and their (genuine or acted) reactions to jump scares are great entertainment! ;D
Popcorn in Bed is one of the many channels I watch. Recently she watched Poltergeist 1982 and was terrified. :D

Not only epic but slow motion black and white epic! ;D
The strongest physical reaction to a jump scare I have ever had was probably caused by James Wan's
Conjuring. It was so strong that I was surprised myself, but still it was maybe 5 % of Cassie's reaction to a jump scare that for me is "funny" rather than scary. Horror movies have become much more scary with time. The Exorcist for example isn't that scary for me (it is still a very good movie!) and Poltergeist (a very lovely and well directed by Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg spooky movie of the 80's) is combination of fantasy and family drama for me rather than horror.
My favorite horror movie reaction channel is probably
she's scared (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChx5mPZFkHeMOMnWAYYv0mA).
So here's someone reacting to The Return of the King.
I haven't seen very many of his uploads, but Peter Jackson's first Tolkien trilogy is my favorite " franchise " by a very long road ( goes ever on, and on... ), and I'll give pretty much anyone who's reacting to the films an " audition ".
Note, he's a bit coarse. But at least it's honest swearing, and mostly bleeped to boot.

I cannot be more specific but there is a video/critique of the Bakshi LotR (in several parts, probably easy to find on ytube) that is absolutely hilarious although that is almost entirely due to the source material.
I saw the Bakshi as a teenager on TV, actually a few years before I read the book (I'd probably read "The "Hobbit") in the late 1980s, long before anyone would thinkg of a "real" LotR movie and had comparably positive memories, probably just because it basically was my first encounter with that story. But it really deserves all the fun that reviewer makes of it.

At the end of the reaction he sums up his feelings regarding Jackson's magnum opus, at one point comparing it to the Harry Potter films, which apparently comprise his favorite franchise. He gives the nod to Jackson for making something incomparable, keeping it real and earning my respect in the process.

Love this guy.
Reaction videos are like partially baffling that they exist/sometimes okay or slightly entertaining/mostly not that interesting. I used to watch them occasionally every now and then, they were okay, but completely stopped. I especially dislike "professional X reacts to Y" videos- just rubs me the wrong way, feels very shallow (and even worse, I usually have no clue who these people are). Idk... IMO the person or subject comes first, not the title- feels halfway like a LinkedIn profile when worded that way.
More baffling is the existence of Mukbang. Just why?....... ???

Cassie of Popcorn In Bed is indeed lovely, but lately I have watched less her reactions. I'm interested of reactions to movies that are important for me (and have seen! Especially newer movies rarely interests me.) Her 10 latest reaction are for movies:
Interview With a Vampire
The Crow
Sleepy Hollow
Tremors
Amadeus
28 days later
Christine
Young Frankenstein
Frankenstein
Shaun of the Dead
Of those I have seen Amadeus, 28 days later, Christine and parts of Tremors and Shaun of the Dead. None of these movies are important for me. I did watch her reaction to Christine.
I choose according to the movies rather than the reactor. I have enjoyed lately the reactions of
Thor Reacts (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW817qQSzTz02XRF0wtA7Ig/videos) to Steven Spielberg movies. I also like horror movie (Shining, Conjuring, Annabelle, Insidious,...) reactions (She's Scared, The Homies, Trixy Blue etc.) I watch reactions on dozens of channels. If I watch one reaction to Spielberg's Jaws or Jurassic Park, Youtube recommends me many other reactions to these movies...

Reaction videos have changed. Before (a year or so ago) people reacted a lot to the "big" movies from the past a few decades ago, but nowadays they react to TV-series, children animations and 5 penny comedies. The "watching for the first time" idea has changed. I started watching these reactions because to me it was interesting to see what a person who has never seen STAR WARS says about it. Not only because I am a Star Wars fan, but also because the status and impact it has in popular culture. I am not interested of watching someone go through Buffy the vampire killer TV series for the first time, or the children's animation "The Secret Life of Pets 2" from 2019. People react to ANYTHING now and all I can say is who cares? I was very interested of what Thor the friendly God thinks about Spielberg's movies, but I am not interested of what he thinks about "How the Grinch Stole the Christmas".
I've hit some music reactions in which they are 'reacting' to music they know well.
If it were somebody who had expert knowledge on the music, fine. It shouldn't be called a 'reaction' video in that case, but those analysis videos can be very good. But somebody just saying, 'I like this song. Listen to be voice. Note here comes a piano solo...' What's the point?

What's the point of cat videos? You like to watch them or then you don't. I have TONS and TONS of other stuff to watch on Youtube. The World changes. Youtube changes with it. Five years ago Youtube videos weren't sponsored by VPN companies and Youtubers didn't beg watchers to join their Patrion. Somehow they were able to earn a living without. Nowadays all they do is whine about how little their videos make money.

Doesn't everyone do that, but channels/content creators that have interested in the past may become uninteresting when the content changes. For example Jake Verda ruined his Fakejake channel for me by becoming a producer and hiring other people to perform in his videos. It was HIS manerism and HIS voice that made the content gold for me. Without it I don't care about it. Jacklyn Glenn made interesting videos many years ago about losing her faith and becoming an atheist + talking about religion and atheism, but then she started to make completely different videos were she rants about various online feuds while drinking red wine and unboxing/marketing sex toys. Sorry, not interested. :(

Also, how many more videos do we need of people reacting to the first side of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon? For some, I am not convinced they really are hearing it for the first time. That would at least be different and potentially more interesting.

I love to cook too, so I recently ran across some of J.M.'s videos--not just the reaction ones, but some straight cooking ones of his giving tips and showing him making some dishes--which are quite helpful. Besides being on youtube, he also posts instructional ones on Twitch (which I hadn't heard of before). I can understand why he no longer wants to work 12-hour days in restaurant kitchens! When I first heard this in the late 60's I knew I was discovering something which might be described as the importance of being seriously wrong. In a just world guitarist Leigh Stephens would be (as the saying goes) gently but firmly shot at sunrise for this abomination.
I say let's call it "outsider art" to dignify it a little and justify the influence it had on me.

A while ago I searched for The X-Files reaction videos on Youtube and found the channel Jules Reacts (https://www.youtube.com/@julesreacts). Juliette from Australia reacts to a few TV shows including The X-Files. She had reacted to about 60 episodes already and I binge-watched those and now I watch her new video whenever one drops (every six days it seems). She is currently near the end of season three.

Quote from: Nunc Dimittis on July 06, 2023, 01:37:49 PMThen there are the reaction videos to another reaction video. I like to cook, so the videos of professional chef James Makinson reacting to a reaction video made by a comedian, who has created a character called Uncle Roger, reviewing the likes of Jamie Oliver, Rachel Ray and Youtube chefs are quite fun - the food being made in some of those videos, though, not so much fun. See here for an example
I don't like James Makinson's reactions because he doesn't add much, and has no personality... but Uncle Roger is fire! I'm subbed to his channel now. He is so funny!

I'm going to have to agree. Not only i don't seem to understand the appeal i find those thumbnails obnoxious as well. Especially that stupid open mouth pose they do whenever i see that my blood pressure goes up and i have to scroll down in a hurry.
Part of the problem of course is that very rarely i get the feeling the "reaction" is actually genuine. There is a classical composer who reacts to heavy metal and other things his subscribers request from him:
https://www.youtube.com/@Doug.Helvering/videos
I saw some of his videos, and i think he is a decent enough guy but it's hard to say how "genuine" his reactions are given he has an audience to maintain.
Likewise for this girl whom i happened to chance upon at one time:
Is she really as impressed as she appears to be or is putting on a nice facade to please her viewers? Who can say.
Going back to Doug, i can believe this reaction was likely real though:

It's not as fun anymore once they know what's coming but i got a few laughts the first time.

So a Planet of the Apes ('68) reaction showed up in my timeline, and I watched it, and of course I then got a slew of other reactions, and in time, I watched them all.
As a child, these were my favourite movies. I was that exact age. But it was only when I watched them again as an adult that I reappraised them. Only the first one stood up. I mean, it had a story to tell and told it. The other movies were 'further adventures of' types of stories. They began with, 'We have these established characters; what stories can we put them in that will generate more income?' (I still find Escape to be fun, and Conquest is much better than I had previously though, especially with the restored ending.)
Regarding the original, obviously, the reactions hinge on how they react to the ending, with the best ones being completely shocked by it. But those are relatively rare. Most reactors have seen the more recent ones and aren't completely mislead. Some are 'I've never seen this movie, but I already know the twist.' A few theorise about it halfway through the movie.
But watching these videos has made the movie somewhat fresh again for me.
It begins with four astronauts, but it's really the story of one of them. Having watched it so many times over the decades, I saw the deaths (etc) of the other three as just plot points to get Taylor alone. Watching the reactors respond to the reveals of the fates of Stuart, Landon and Dodge (and Dodge's post-death fate) makes me appreciate them more, to be stranded on an 'alien' planet and your crew picked off one by one until you're ultimately all alone.
Some other moments:
Landon planting the American flag and Taylor's very strange reaction to it. In fact, some of the younger ones don't get the flag planting thing and some thought it was a memorial to Stuart.
Reactors are divided on Taylor's attitude early in the movie. He is a total jerk, which some don't like but others love it as a matter of characterisation.
When they find the first plant, many reactors comment on them digging it up and killing it.
The reveal of the Apes is quite good. We see the horses first ('Oh, they have horses!') and then the rifles ('They have guns??'), and only then do we see them.
When Taylor is shot in the throat ('neck' they always say), they often think he has died.
Not sure if I was ever cognizant of this or not, but no ape speaks during that lengthy hunt scene, and it's only after that first-time viewers would know they speak. And the first word he hear an ape say is 'Smile!'
That's the camera scene, which resonates well with today's viewers: the hunters being photographed with their dead prey. Very Instagram-y.
That scene is pretty horrific, with dead humans hung upside-down. I've really come to appreciate this as a horror movie.
Predictably, the response tends to be good to 'Take your stinkin' paws off me you damn dirty ape!' Though sometimes the reaction is 'Oh, so that's where that comes from!'
And back to the final scene. We know it's a shock ending, but they don't. What I mean is, even when they get the shock, they still don't realilse it's the ending. It's only when the credits start rolling that they realise that was the final scene. When most of us watch it, we know it's about to end. So it's really cool to see this from that perspective.
So one thing that's never commented on is the character of Lucius, Dr Zira's nephew. The fact that he represented the hippy culture of the day is just completely lost of today's viewer.
Some more laughable moments: One reaction to Landon's 'Going...going...gone' is 'Is this where that came from?' Similarly, another viewer wondered if the 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' scene originated in this movie.
I don't know if any of this counts, but here is a detailed critique of Foundation that I enjoyed:
btw he finishes with the best adaptation of Asimov by a landslide... as...
The End of Eternity as a Russian tv miniseries. You'll find that at the end of the video.
