Question: BWV 1080 classification?
Option 1: Keyboard
Option 2: Any
Option 3: Should be keyboard, but let poor Springrite have his say
Option 4: Not any, but not just keyboard
Option 5: It's not a keyboard work
Title: Bach's Greatest Works
Post by: DavidW on August 31, 2009, 04:28:59 AM
Edit: The list is complete turn to page 7 to see the results.  The first of the phase 2 threads can be found here (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,14313).

I want to do what Karl is doing but for Bach. :)

Different rules though-- you can nominate three per genre (as specified below), you're not to repeat what's already been nominated, fragments don't count, spurious compositions don't count, and individual works only excepting The Art of the Fugue which will be considered one work, The Well Tempered Clavier will be considered two works, the Mass in B Minor will be considered one work (I say that since some consider it to be several works stitched together).  But the English Suites, for example, will NOT be considered one work.

Genres--
Cantatas (sacred and secular)
All other vocal works
Organ
Keyboard
Solo (non-keyboard) and Chamber
Orchestral

If that doesn't cover everything we can have a potpourri category.  The point is after shortening the list to what are popular to semi-popular works here on gmg, is that we're going to sort them out and construct a list by genre similar to classical.net's guide to cantatas which might provide a basis for newbies to explore Bach, so they do not feel overwhelmed.  If not that, at least we'll have fun sorting out and discussing the merits of works independent of the ever constant discussion of performances.

The Mozart thread is about ready to kick off the second phase, the more interesting one, and hopefully in a few days we'll be there too.  Like Karl, I will update to give lists to see where we stand and make further nominations easier.  Unlike Karl though I will abstain from listing, especially listing a huge #. ;D

It's a wide musical world!  I've sung in one, and I later conducted a performance of it, myself.  So I don't feel "shut out" from his Cantatas . . . but for whatever reason(s), they haven't been a field of my own musical inquiry.

To quote Jeeves, I understand they have given satisfaction  8)

Yeah Dave you'll have to choose on those cello suites, two are taken.  I affirm Springrite's choice to cite Art of the Fugue for orchestral, and it still can be used for keyboard and organ as well. :)

Affirm whatever you like, but I would reverse the above statement. AoF is keyboard music, this has been resolved by musicologists for decades, and the notion that Bach intended it for indefinite instrumentation is one of those myths that refuse to die. (But in fact one of my favorite versions is the orchestral arrangement by William Malloch known as The Art of Fuguing.)

Otherwise too many to choose from. I gave myself a 3-month project to hear all 60 CDs from the Leonhardt/Harnoncourt cantata set, and I can't even remember all the ones I gave high marks to. Certainly though, the two Passions, the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, the Italian Concerto, some of the motets like Singet dem Herrn, and many of the big organ preludes and fugues - the G minor, B minor, D major, F major, and more - would have to be listed.

You are absolutely correct. That is why I said my choice is a non-purist one. I listen to the orchestral version or the Simpson quartet version simply because I hear the voiced more clearly. But I really should get a top-notch keyboard version that my untrained ear can follow better.

Oh, and I do love Sleeper Awake as favorite cantata. The others are: Cello Suites, St. Mathew's Passion, Viola da Gamba Sonatas, Goldberg Variation and Sinfonias and Inventions.

I think it's fine to list Art of the Fugue has an orchestral choice because so many like the work performed that way, that I feel it would be a disservice to them to deny them that as their tops just because it's a keyboard work.  Bach already has a catalog, this is not what this thread is really about. :)

Perhaps. But since Bach wrote hundreds of keyboard fugues, it's more than likely he did not expect all the voices to be heard clearly at all times. (There is a school of thought, wrong-headed IMO, that the goal of fugue playing should be always to bring out the subject and let the other voices fend as they may.) Fugue is rather a texture in which there is a fluid interplay of voices, where sometimes one voice is more prominent and sometimes voices disappear into the overall texture.

Oh, I am digressing? My bad. I don't really care.

Definitely not happy with the fact that one piece can only be mentioned once. :'(

These works came up quickly (have they been mentioned?):
Cantatas BWV 106 (Actus tragicus), BWV 84 Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke & 125 Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin. And for organ the entire Clavier-Übung, dritter Theil.

The rest has been mentioned already, me thinks.

EDIT: not mentioned, though a personal favourite of mine is BWV 1001 (Sonata in G minor for violin solo). From the first bars a delight for the ears ..... and soul.

I would like to just list my all-time favorites in order of affection and no specific categories:

Musical Offering

Mass in B Minor

Violin Concerto in E Major

Chaconne from the Violin Partitia No. 2, in the Busoni piano adaptation

Concerto for Violin and Oboe (I believe this may be a modern adaptation of another concerto, but this is the way I know it), especially the spine-tingling slow movement

Magnificat in D

Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, the first movement with its incredibly beautiful keyboard cadenza

Orchelbuchlein

and of course many many more from the Bard of Harmony, but the above top my list.

I think that the concertos for oboe, and for oboe d'amore are done by Bach himself and have their own bwv #.  I'd have to check...

The original BWV 1060, which is thought to a be a concerto for oboe and violin is presumed lost, and it survives now as a concerto in C minor for two harpsichords. The index 1060(R) is sometimes assigned to the reconstruction in D minor of the original work.

If Bach is referred to without further identification, J.S. Bach is always assumed.

Now I know that if one speaks of Tchaikovsky, one must be careful to specify Peter Ilyich or Boris . . . .

I'm starting to get the feeling that he's a bleeding chunks composer to some and an all consuming passion for others.  Not as much middle ground as you would find for other composers.  Some want to list a handful of works they cherish, others would want to write the whole catalog down.  Maybe I should contribute now.

BWV 1044, perhaps? It's the concerto for harpsichord, flute and violin. The H has some wonderful passages in the work, and in the second movement the violinist just pizzacatoes [just created that word] along for most of the duration.

I think that would be pretty easy considering how much time and effort went into Art of the Fugue and WTC.  We can also judge how valuable Bach himself considered a work based on if he kept a pretty final draft or not.  Brandenburg Concertos and the Orchestral Suites for example he had carefully written up, and delicately added corrections to if anything happened to the paper.  Most of his works did not receive that kind of treatment. :)

I still need to compensate for Karl listing 15 freaking items on the Mozart thread, so I'll just list one per, excepting chamber. :D

Cantatas: bwv 147 duh, is Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring too popular?  The arias (and not just that one choral) are the most interesting and compelling parts though and the entire work as a cohesive whole is a magnificent masterpiece.

Vocal: Easter Oratorio because I love it, played by big band romanticized treatments, or lean HIP it's just swell music. :)

Organ: well I actually I need to listen more, and it's been awhile, so I'll pass

Keyboard: French Overture, and yes I did not put the entire Clavier-Ubung on the list (which French Overture is a part of right?) that's cheating, I forgot who did that now!!  Anyway French overture is delightful, charming music.

Solo/Chamber: sonata for viola da gamba bwv 1027 early Bach right? but excellent, love the sound of the instrument, it's beautiful even if not highly compelling drama like his later works I randomly chose 1027, I like them all.  I wanted to talk about flute sonatas or lute suites but I'll not be greedy.

Orchestral: Suite #2 I love it, enough said. :)

OK, David, I'll have a go:

Keyboard:
BWV 827 Partita #3 in a minor

Solo:
BWV 1011 Cello Suite #5 in c

Orchestral:
BWV 1067 Orchestral Suite #2 in b minor

Sorry, Dude, I don't know any singing except for the lovely "Coffee Cantata". :)

Okay, there are some I think that are great that have not been mentioned yet, a couple, probably, because they are too often played, but here goes:

Cantata: BWV 82, "Ich Habe Genug"

Vocal: BWV 229: Mottete "Komm, Jesu Komm"

Keyboard: French Suite #2 in C Minor

Solo/Chamber: Sonata in B Minor for Violin and Harpsichord

Orchestral: Concerto In F Minor, BWV 1056

So far, the organ works are an undiscovered country for me.

    Bachs greatest works?

    BWV 1 - 1126 all included, I would say.

Lots of your favourites were already mentioned by others!
You have offended the rules and therefore should be banned from this thread .... IMHO. $:)

    Sir,
I'd like to complain about this list.
I mentioned the entire Third part of the so-called Clavier-Übung!
    I don't see it!
    Where have you put it?
    Shame on you!

Sincerely yours and mine and everyone's,
    et cetera et cetera,

    Mister Marc (mrs.).

Oh I thought you said the entire Clavier-Ubung, okay if it's just the third part it can go on the list.

Yeah, after the entire Leipzig chorales were chosen as one composition, I decided to go for it.
Of course, thanks to the BWV catalogue, we consider almost every piece of it as a separate composition.
But on the whole I really think that the entire Übung 3 is Bach's magnum opus for the organ. As Don & Karl were praising BWV 552 (and rightly so), I also consider every choral piece plus the wonderful Duetti as true masterpieces.

Ditto WTC on individual BWV #s, but having to confine oneself to say a three minute Prelude and Fugue seems a little ridiculous! :D

I'm starting to get the feeling that he's a bleeding chunks composer to some and an all consuming passion for others.  Not as much middle ground as you would find for other composers.  Some want to list a handful of works they cherish, others would want to write the whole catalog down.  Maybe I should contribute now.

Technically, 'bleeding chunks' is applicable to Wagner because, with his concept of "through-music" which flows throughout the whole act, there is never an ending cadence except at the end of the act. Therefore individual pieces must literally be ripped from the fabric and do actually bleed, unless a conductor has written or commissioned a false cadence to be used when recording the piece. This cannot be applied to Bach, becuse it is inconceivable that someone would prefer to slice up one of his architecturally perfect movements into one or more sections. For example, have we ever heard only part of the 2nd movement of the third orchestral suite (commonly known as the Air on the G String) or only a portion of the first movement of the D Minor keyboard concerto No. 1? Inconceivable. Therefore, Bach's movements should not be referred to as bleeding chunks.

Thanks Chasz I hadn't really thought about what the "bleeding chunks" really mean, I just took it to be favorite snips, but put that way I see the appropriateness of applying that specifically to excerpts from Wagner.

Even Bach's huge all consuming works, can still be broken into complete self contained movements. :)

Relax. No sucking is needed. :P

If you're not familiar with this work and you're getting curious, then just start with BWV 552.
A magnificent prelude in the shape of a french overture, followed by a splendid fugue with a rather catchy theme (IMO).

But the real shivers come with the second 'grand' Kyrie ("Heiliger Geist" BWV 672) and the incomparable "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" BWV 687. This one always leaves me breathless.

Apart from that: in general, I think that this work (CU III) is one of Bach's most spiritual and meaningful compositions.

    Bachs greatest works?

    BWV 1 - 1126 all included, I would say.

    ;D

And since most of the Big List is just reworkings and transcriptions, this thread is getting kind of redundant. :P ;D

Well, after listening to the Big List, I think I couldn't care less about such vapidities. :P >:D

    .....................

I think it's time for BWV 58 Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid.
(Not on the slightly smaller Big List .... yet.)

Okay there you have it.  Sorry I threw out BWV 1060R because it broke my rules
Quotefragments don't count, spurious compositions don't count
and reconstructions fall into fragment/spurious category.

Phase 2 begins after the three day weekend is over.  In the meantime there are a few things I'm looking for:

    (a) corrections to the list, i.e. mistakes I made
    (b) identification of any fragments or spurious compositions that somehow made it on the list
    (c) voting on a poll (I'm about to make) on whether bwv 1080 should be allowed in any category besides the keyboard

I think I might eliminate bwv 1079 from the orchestral section, isn't it a chamber work?  Can somebody explain to me how it got on the orchestral list?  Or was that simply an accident of mine?

This thread has turned out quite fine. :)

Yeah I just saw that, it is sad not to see BWV 58 on the list.  On the other hand, I'm glad to see that BWV 88 is NOT on the list, it has it's moments but meh. ;D

    I'd say: chamber music.
But: this thread is your party. We're only visitors. ;)

Wouldn't be much of a party if it's just myself. ;D

Okay Musical Offering is now chamber only, also somebody noticed that I just dropped the French Overture down a black hole, it's now on the list. :)

Done, bwv 1080 will only appear in the keyboard list as per the results of the poll. :)

Time to lock the thread, we're done here-- part 2a can be found here (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,14313), other threads will follow quickly on it's feet, we're ready for phase 2.  I hope that posters are willing to keep this going. :)
