I love the winter olympics, and can watch pretty much all of the sports. Certainly, the men's ice hockey tournament will be extremely competitive. :)

Nah, the Finnish Lions will get the Gold this year. ;)
The US team sure has lots of great names and stellar goalkeeping, but how will they do in the big rink? Lots of KHL players in Russian, Finnish, Czech & Slovakian teams, and the NHL players from these countries (and the Swedes) know the big rinks like the backs of their hands, too. USA and Canada will face each other in the bronze game, and it will be the adult Finns time to teach Swedes another lesson in the gold game, after the junior WC final 8)
I sure hope Mikko Koivu will be in top shape.

You can pretty much roll the dice to see who may face who in the Gold medal game.
Yes, the big ice surface will be a huge factor, and one that can play against the Canadian and American teams.
With Finland, Sweden, Russia, Czech Repulic, Slovakia, USA, Canada and don't forget the incredibly tough Switzerland team, it should be a dandy tournament.
Goaltending, defence and special teams play will be the factors, and who can peak their games going into the elimination rounds.
Contests, that what it should be about!

Yep, completely impossible to know now which two teams are in the Gold medal game, of course.
Yes, hopefully the Swiss, Austrians, Norwegians, and Latvians will play well too.
Finland should do well in goaltending with Rask, Lehtonen & Niemi, but then Smith & Quick are no slouches, either. The defense is a bit thin, though, as always.

The defense is probrably Canada's strongest part of their line up. The forwards are pretty good too.
Goaltending could be a question mark. If Luongo and Price can play at the level they are capable of, that will make a huge difference. They will need stellar goaltending to make it past the quarter-finals.
Russia's goaltending may be their question mark.

President Putin knows that his Olympics have sparked controversy abroad. He is well aware that many Western leaders will not be attending.
But he knows, too, that most Russians will be glued to their TV sets - more concerned with how many medals their country will win, not how much money it cost to put on the show. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26062757)
It seems that two current players from my local hockey team (Florida Panthers) will be in the Olympics--one for Finland and one for Slovakia--and one ex member of the team will be playing for Finland.
Yes, we really do have an NHL team in South Florida (this may sound strange to those outside North America). And if Beckham gets his way, we will finally have a real soccer team here too.

Yeah, Alexander Barkov, who is probably the youngest hockey player in the Olympics (born in 1995)

I would have put money on the Olympic flame being lit to the conclusion of Shostakovich symphony No. 5!! Too obvious perhaps.

UK's Independent paper said "Alright, so an LED-lit Lenin didn't summarily execute the last Tsar and his family. There were no Solzhenitsyn on stilts, no farms being collectivised," he writes. "But Russia is no more guilty than anyone else of airbrushing out the less savoury moments in its history when in the world's spotlight." I got a bit emotional because of the Olympic victory of Stefan Groothuis (1000 meter speedskating for men), twice one of the favourites for this distance before, almost fell in Torino 2006, suffering from high fever in Vancouver 2010, former 'nutcase' (depressions, suicidal) and severely injured more than once, and now, finally, Olympic champion.
Also Canadian Denny Morisson, injured many times, sponsored by a gay nightclub, did a terrific job with his silver medal.
The women's downhill was historical, too, with a shared gold medal for Dominique Gisin (Suisse) and Tina Maze (Slovenia). They look like twin sisters!

Yeah, but Sweden has always underperformed in the games that aren't really important.
Men's Ice Hockey, Finland 8 - 4 Austria
Obviously defensive playing will have to improve a lot, and finishing too - it could have very easily been 10-4 at least. But a reasonably promising start, with 16 players getting points. Selänne has some trouble with the back of his neck - nothing major, but he only played in the first period, assisting Granlund's goal.
Jarkko Immonen & Mikael Granlund both scored twice, with Jussi Jokinen & Petri Kontiola each scoring and assisting once.
Michael Grabner scored three goals for Austria...
Rask had a nightmarish game with 4 goals out of 20 shots - lots of bad luck and bad defensive playing there, and none of the goals was Rask's fault, though.
For a country that has only a few hundred people that plays the game, and half of them from the Kopitar family, Slovenia is playing really well and holding their own against Russia. Slovenia may well end with no points but a showing that they should be proud of.
Come on, Kopi!
Plushchenko injured and pulls out of men's skating! Russia now have no one in the men's competition.
Henrik Zetterberg is out of the Olympics with a herniated disk. Possibly out for the season with Detroit. I think Sweden is finished now. After a discouraging second half against the Czechs, and with their best player and captain going down, they will be in tough for the rest of the tournament.
On the other hand, team USA looked very good against an undermatched Slovak team. Canada on the other hand never really got going against an even worse Norwegian team. I think USA and Russia have to be heavy favorites early to meet in the gold medal game. It's still very early, though.

I'd be more worried about Russia's game against Slovenia than Sweden's game against Czechs.
But it's indeed too early to say anything based on Finland's Russia's, Canada's or Sweden's games yet. USA was impressive, sure. Probably 4 of those 5 will be playing for the medals, but that's hardly surprising.
Well, if they handed out gold medals after the first game of the round robin, the USA would have the gold, and they would have had the gold medal as well in Salt Lake City and Vancouver.
I was surprised that USA blew out Slovakia 7-1, as I consider Slovakia one of the contenders.
Doesn't mean a thing. USA could potentially play Slovakia in the Gold Medal game, and a different outcome might occur.
It's the preliminary round. Not about who plays the best opening game or has the most glamourous score in game 1.
It's about playing your best game by the time the pre-lim round is over.
Looking forward to the Russia versus USA game, and the Canada versus Finland game. Should both be dandies! :)

+1 to all of this, except Slovakia - I didn't believe for one second that they would stand a chance with their aging team, and not having their best goalie in there for the US game was just idiotic.

USA beats Russia 3-2 in a shootout. That was the most exciting shootout I've ever seen, with TJ Oshie scoring 4 times, including the winner. If the NHL were to do that, I'd actually like the shootout! Still, I'd rather not see this in the gold medal game.
Yes, shootouts are like kissing through a screened window, but ties are the absolute worst, so we take it. Oshie kicked butt! :)

Insane.

Of course.
But I feel sad for Verweij. He's a funny character, but right now he's completely destroyed.
A decade or so ago it would have been a dead heat for gold, like the women's downhill this year.
But now in speedskating, the thousandths of seconds are also counted.

Quickie can have his off days now and then but he is a big game performer for sure. But I think a big thumbs up has to go to coach Dan Bylsma (I do remember him playing for the KINGS as a checking line specialist) for picking Oshie to take all the final shots. Four out of six is great percentage for shootout.

Absolutely.
It's baffling that the Swedes has been second rate, are missing their original captain Zetterberg, have been outplayed in all of their games to differing extents, yet are still perfect and have clinched their group. I think they'll get a rude awakening in the elimination rounds. I don't think they can flip a switch that quickly. Their bright spot has been Erik Karlsson, who leads all skaters in points, amazingly.
I'm interested to see if Ryan Miller has still got his 2010 mojo (aside from the golden goal, which was rather weak) in the Slovenia game. I'll try and awake to see the last of it (doesn't help that it starts at 4:30 am my time).

If you are talking about the clear interference penalty on Crosby in the first period as being 'rather flimsy'? :)
Well, if it was a 'rather flimsy' call, then how about these:
*Nash
never touched the puck, only the mesh on the top of the net. That was a good goal that should have counted.
*The hit from behind in OT by Finland on Jamie Benn of Canada. That was a major penalty.
*The clutching and grabbing the Fins were getting away with all day on Canadian forwards in Finland's own end, which is where most of the game was played.

It wouldn't be so bad if the referees had given penalties for similar playing in similar situations outside of this particular case.

This combines two of my passions: downhill skiing and violin babes 8)
"Violin virtuoso Vanessa Mae, Thailand's first ever female skier at the Olympics, came last in a rainy giant slalom on Tuesday but was still bubbling with joy after finishing the slushy course.
The Singapore-born British former child prodigy came through the finish line in 67th place after two runs, a massive 50.10sec behind winner Tina Maze of Slovenia.
Hesitantly out of the starting gate, she clocked 3min 26.97sec down the course, 11.35sec behind her closest rival Xia Lina of China.
But at least, she finished both runs -- unlike 22 others who failed to make it down." --Sim Sim Wissgott (AFP)
The only problem I have with Vanessa Mae's participation is that it is such an over-dressed sports, necessitated by the cold temperature. Maybe next time we will see some violin babes in the summer games, possibly in beach volleyball?
And Russia isn't playing for medals! Finland beat them in the quarterfinals :) :) :)

Yes, Team USA has looked very dangerous indeed. But then, there are plenty of scorers in Canada's team who might just warm up for that game. I'd certainly prefer facing Canada over USA.
I'm picking USA and FIN in the final. Why, you ask? I believe chemistry trumps talent in a short competition, and USA and Finland have that over Canada and Sweden. Also, personal bias. I am an American and I have a soft spot for Finland, hehe.

Women's hockey final didn't end as USA wished it would have :D
Cam America will exact revenge for the US against Canada tomorrow.

The Americans better beat those Canadians tomorrow. That ending to the women's final was absolutely brutal. That post hit on the empty net was painful to see, also. Would have all but sealed a US win. Also, some of the US chances at the beginning of overtime were ridiculous.
The women's final was indeed a dramatic game, that post hit was something else.
Finland really should have scored when they had that 5-on-3 power play. -.-
Olympic hockey doesn't really start until US Canada.
My money is on Quickie to have a great game and a 4:1 US victory.
This will be the one time I root for Jonathan Quick. I normally hate the Kings with a passion. I am just hoping Canada's forwards don't wake up and swiss cheese him. Quick can steal a game, but he can also put in a stinker every now and then.
You think there will be more goals in the third period?
Are the two goalies going for the best combined save percentage? It is at 98.4% at the moment.

:( Yes. It was really unfortunate that Finland couldn't dress Rask in goal, due to his flu bug. Don't know if it would have made a difference? Perhaps. Finland's Lehtinen played very well in relief.
Only one NHL team is guaranteed to get gold, silver, and bronze medals, because they have players that are on all 4 finalists: Sweden, Finland, USA, Canada. (Hint: It's not the Jets)

Leht
onen ;)
It was too bad that Rask had flu, but that didn't really matter at all, as all three of the Finnish goalies are great. The offensive playing, esp. on power play, was far too weak, and there were too many mistakes in defense. Finland will have to play a lot better to make sure Teemu, Olli Jokinen, Sami Salo, and Kimmo Timonen finish their games in the Finnish national team with medals.
Atta boy, Price! Quick was amazing, though - could've been a blowout without him.
Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle and William Frullani sent home
Two-time Olympic champion Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle of Germany and Italian bobsleigh brakeman William Frullani have been sent home from Sochi 2014 after failing drugs tests.
Both tested positive for methylhexanamine with A and B samples.
Biathlete Sachenbacher-Stehle, who won gold in 2002 and 2010, finished fourth in two events this year.
Police officer Frullani will be replaced in Saturday's four-man event by Samuele Romanini.
The 34-year-old Frullani is a former international decathlete, who competed at the 2006 European Championships.
But it is Sachenbacher-Stehle's drugs test which is the bigger news, having won gold in the team sprint in the last Olympics in Vancouver and in the 4x5km in Salt Lake City.

Now now... 2:0 in the second. Can then hold on, or score more? Teemu is amazing!
I know how strange this may sound but, during the 0:5 loss, goalie Jonathan Quick was just about the best player for the US. It was as if as soon as the chance for gold is gone, the team decided to quit.
At least (I hope) they don't trash the hotel rooms like Chelios and co. did years ago. Then again, I do not think they'd dare to do so in Russia.
Good final Olympic appearance for Teemu!
Well, the Finns played great, the USA played poorly, so in the end, all got what they deserved. Congratulations to Finland on their excellent performance, and sorry you just got the Bronze when you should have been playing for the Gold! :)

Team USA just looked tired and flat in that game. Quick played very well, considering.
I'm very happy for Teemu and friends today. The USA deserved nothing with that effort. Hyvää Suomi!
Wonderful game indeed for Finland; a shame they weren't on the same level in the semifinal against Sweden. Oh well, Olympic bronze is nice enough, and what a way for Teemu to end his career in the national team, scoring two goals!
Canada 3-0
Gold! :)
A great team effort throughout the tournament. Allowing just 3 goals against in 6 games, and doing so playing a team attack and support style. A bunch of superstars that played unselfishly. Really proud to be a Canadian right now. Double gold in hockey, and double gold in curling!
5 or 6 years ago, my men's curling team played against Kaitlyn Lawes, the 3rd on the Canadian women's curling team. She was a junior player back then, preparing to play for the Junior Provincial and Junior National women's team. Needless to say, we were just a 'club curling team', and they defeated us pretty easily. :D
On style points, my favourite hockey jerseys were Finland's white jerseys, with the blue cross depicting their nation's flag. Beautiful uniforms! :)
How about the Dutch speed skating team? 24 medals, all of them in speed skating. Absolutely mind-boggling and dominating! :)

Canada certainly deserved that gold, great playing. Congrats!
Can't disagree on the jerseys, though I've always liked Canada's jerseys too - that red & white colour with the maple leaf is very indeed.
Of there's any justice in the world, Sweden will give their silver medals to Finland since Nicklas Bäckström used pseudoephedrine. :D
In 1974, Finland lost their hockey bronze since traces of ephedrine was found in a player's blood - they know now that it was because he'd eaten bananas.
My ideal finish would be Canada and Finland in the final (regardless of the result of the final) and Slovenia in bronze, that last of which would never happen, but it would have been great!

'We' were hoping for 12 medals or so .... but this result was beyond all dreams.
To be honest though, I was very disappointed with the (longtrack) speedskating performances of especially USA, Canada, Russia and Norway.
Posted in Other Crap:
"Here are the changes in the overall medal totals of seven strong countries from the Vancouver games to Sochi (Vancouver total listed first)
Canada 26-25
Germany 30-19
Norway 23-26
USA 37-28
Netherlands 8-24
Russia 15-33
Austria 16-17
As you can see, Germany and the USA had the sharpest declines, while Russia improved dramatically and The Netherlands emerged as a new powerhouse. The Netherlands tripled its disappointing Vancouver total, while Russia more than doubled up on home snow and ice."
