It is a piece for a tenor, a large choir and a big orchestra.  It has therefore large proportions.  For those who like Beethoven 9th or Mahler 8th (symphonie des mille), they will fit right at ease.  It was commissioned for the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Buda and Pest and created in 1923 with Bartok dances suite.

Well, I'm quite aware the work calls for a vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, what I meant was how do you like the work?

I'm listening to Martinon conducting Debussy Vol 4,now.

Although I am not a big fan of "big" pieces, I like this one because it is concise and goes right to the point.  It is 23 minutes long.

Final disc, symphonies 5 & 7.  The Fifth is world class, easily in the same league as Levine or Szell or anyone else.  Järvi leads an intense and swift and powerful rendition where appropriate, and yet he also lets the slow movement breathe a bit.  Digital glare and edge seem either less pronounced or more helpful.

Järvi then leads a superb version of the Seventh, a work I've until now found to be ho-hum.  While still not Prokofiev's best symphony, the work seems to unfold nicely, and has some very balletic sounding music throughout.  One would expect something like that in the Allegretto, but it is evident elsewhere.

Järvi definitely bests Kosler for me.  I'm not sure I need another complete cycle, though Ashkenazy's new complete set is out now, so who knows . . .

Disc 2, LvB Second and Sixth.  Both are a bit too broad of tempo for my taste, though both are supremely well played, and the Szene am Bach is a wonderful blend of beauty, weight, and tenderness.
