Kevin Volans: String Quartets 2 & 3 [Balanescu Quartet]

André

A new composer for me, the program is interesting and generous (2 discs)

A Midsummer Night's Dream is the only well-known among Mendelssohn's incidental musiken, so the others are nice discoveries. 4 discs for 5€. Nice!

An intriguing issue. I have this composer's Wozzeck but haven't listened to it yet.

I have these

Your CD must be a compilation of the Brull works. They are well worth listening to. The Jadassohn is a tad less interesting, but also worth getting, whether or not you have the CPO recording of his symphonies.

The same series originally included a CD of Brull's piano music, which I don't think I have, and a piano concerto by a composer named Pabst, which struck me as not worth the effort of recovering it from oblivion.

Thanks for the comments, it's encouraging. Here's the contents of the Brüll twofer. They seem to be the same performances:

Yes, that's them. Don't know why the copyright date is given as 2018. Marius seems to have no relation to Igor, btw.

For Christmas, something totally different, but a challenge.....

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

I have some of these in their original releases. While I like the music, I really find some of the performances disappointing. So I stopped collecting them. I wish a better orchestra would record these.

The fact that I have ordered this just means I have finally given up hope of a complete Markevitch edition from DGG.

The guy was a genius. It'a a crime so many of his recordings are impossible to find.

I totally agree with assessment on Markevitch!  :)

He should have been recorded more - I would definitely be in for a complete edition!
Haven't given up hope.... The stream of complete editions doesn't seem to have dried up just yet.

According to Murphy's law, by buying this incomplete edition I guarantee that they will release a complete edition shortly. Not buying it would cause it to go out of print, which would be worse. Constructive pessimism.

The Markevitch disc I wait for still is his recording of Lili Boulanger's Faust and Helene.  Ropey technical recording and pretty ropey orchestral playing - but a stunning tenor and stunning performance.  As far as I know this has never made it onto CD

André

Markevitch was extensively recorded, but not always given the best technical conditions. Some of his best recordings emanate from DGG, but he also worked for EMI, Melodiya etc.

EMI has a big 18 cd box in its Icon series. What exactly is missing from the DGG box ?

Trying Gyrowetz today for the first time.  Initial impression:  agreeable music very well played and recorded.
