That Noskowski disc from earlier in the thread.  Excellent disc.

And now, Raff: Symphony No. 5

[asin] B00004U4BC[/asin]

Followed up with Urs Schneider, who makes much more of the music.  I can imagine a more lush recording and orchestra, but I think I can safely discard the Carthy disc.

I love Raff's 5th Symphony, especially the spectral finale. I like Bernard Herrmann's old Unicorn performance although there is a very good one on ASV as well.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

That's a very fine symphony and an interesting looking release.

I'm not a huge Paavo Jarvi fan - but this disc is really excellent - easily the best version of the Rott Symphony I've heard.  Powerful work.

Oups ! Didn't notice that  ;D.

Here goes:

I have three or four LPs from the same set. The original recordings were made in the GDR by Eterna. I also have Annerose Schmidt from the same source playing solo Prokofiev. She looks fairly youthful when these recordings were made. I wonder what become of her?

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Biber,Schmelzer,Walther

I would recommend this CD to anyone who likes Biber, Schmelzer etc.
Very beautifully recorded and played without annoying exaggerations.

Never heard her name before this discussion here ... she performed until 2006 it seems. Here is some information:

That one was reissues (sans - it seems extensive? - liner notes) recently, only got that reissue (part of the formerly Virgin cheapo 2CD series), but haven't yet properly listened to it. The new one is very pleasant indeed.

Thanks for link. Out of the Soviet Bloc the GDR were the most strict in not allowing exposure to the West for their artists.

Listening now: (yes, why not? :D )

Recording from October 2001, 5 pages of liner notes plus texts with English translation.

And here is the reissue:

(Frankly, the Higginbottom coupling seems a waste of space - Schneebeli made a wonderful Desmarest recording for Virgin!)

She's an excellent musician. This german article from 2016 was published for her 80th birthday. I presume sh's still alive.
Apparently she was in bad health then, and unable to attend the festivities.

Fame and talent sometimes come at a price. She describes her father as a tyrant:

"Her father taught her in musical theory and put her under constant pressure. Even when he was in military service (Wehrmacht) he sent het weekly teaching letters and homework, tasks she was to carry out immediately. Bernhard Schmidt demanded so much of his daughter that she had a breakdown at age 18. Even earlier the " Künstlergewerkschaft" (something like the artists union) had been involved, threathening the father with a lawsuit for "child labor"..."

An amazing recording of pieces from Codex Calixtinus, which I somehow missed on original release (on Ambroisie). The best piece possibly, and my favorite definitely, is responsory in organum Dum esset salvator in monte which positively soars, hair-raisingly beautiful.

Playing now! Hovhaness is often criticised as writing the same work, over and over again. This particularly applying to the symphonies. There is some truth in this. I should know! I had a big pile of Hovhaness cd's,at one point, and I got rid of most of them. However,at his best,Hovhaness' music is strikingly individual. The few cd's that I mantained in my collection really are worth listening to......and this is one of them!! Get a new Hovhaness cd,and during a period of initial enthusiasm, you'll think it's great. After a while, though, you'll start thinking,"Oh dear,he's done this before, but maybe a bit better?!!" The acid test for a Hovhaness cd is multiple listens, over a period of time. This one is great! I would put it up there with the very best Hovhaness cd's,in terms of inspiration and the quality of the performances. And I've listened to allot! If you love,"Mountains and Rivers without End" (And I do!) the music here shares very much the same atmosphere and mood. Vistas of strange landscapes, and, you guessed it;mountains and rivers, and temples, come to mind. Also, strangely (and showing my age!) those old Rupert the Bear books, with old Chinese men and vistas of mysterious landscapes, dotted with pagodas,on high hills! Unlike some Hovhaness cd's I have listened to,I haven't found myself looking at the cd tracking once,to see how much music is left, before the cd ends. As soon as you begin to wonder whether Hovaness' inspiration will begin to flag another movement,or track begins, with wondrously beguiling, entrancing sounds (and another, strikingly, imaginative idea) which, immediately, draw you back in! The effect is quite hypnotic! Except that you, want,to listen! :) The bad news is that this cd has been deleted, and asking prices are usually high. You just have to keep looking! I should add,the sound quality is excellent! A wonderful cdl!! :) :) :)
(And nice artwork,I might add! :) :) :) )

Not the first or last time in sport as well as the arts that pushy parents overstep the mark.
I listened to Schmidt today playing Mozart's K.246. Her playing has great purity but she never prettifies Mozart. A serious rendition which I found most refreshing. My only quibble is the size of the Dresden Orchestra, big band Mozart is justly consigned to the past.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.
