Whoever came up with idea that President Trump, the most divisive president in history, should make a plea to the nation for unity must be very out of touch or cynical. "Together we can break decades of political stalemate. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America's future," said the same president who just hours before had been excoriating Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y) and other leading Democrats and pressing aides to make the speech tougher on Democrats.

All State of the Union speeches attempt to put the administration's best foot forward, but to reinvent entirely oneself in such glaring terms inevitably earns the president derision and further erodes a weak president's already diminishing credibility.

No speech can save Trump from the reality that the entire Trump-o-sphere is now being targeted by investigators. He needs a hole somewhere that's safe for him not to be President. If he hides out in the Antarctic climate change will come and get him. Maybe the Space Force.....

The answer is obvious. Either in Russia with Snowden or in North Korea. He'll really regret not getting that Trump Tower Moscow deal done.

Ordinarily Assange would be obliged to take him in, but that room in the Equadorian embassy is pretty crowded already.

China will build a dacha for him on the dark side of the moon. Then it'll be up to Bezos if he wants to go get him.

Breaking news on CNN: the state of Virginia will be dissolved. Arlington and Alexandria municipalities will be appropriated by DC, the remainder of Northern Virginia will go to Maryland, and rest of the state will be fairly divided between DE, NC, TN, and maybe even KY.

The governor of Virginia, a Democrat,  made some comments that supported the extreme pro-choice position. In revenge, an anonymous GOPer publicized an old photo from his med school yearbook in which apparently he and a friend posed for some costume party or similar, one dressed as a Klansman, the other in blackface. (It's not quite clear which one is the governor.)  The more leftist elements of the Democratic Psrty are now trying to force him to resign.  If he resigned, the Lt Gov, a much more Leftward man, and himself a black, would replace him. Except he has just been publicly accused of sexually molesting a woman, so now he is under pressure to resign himself. The state attorney general would be next in line to become governor, and has now (preemptively I assume) announced he once dressed up in blackface as a college student, and issued fulsome apologies for being a teenager at one point in his life.

If alll three are forced out, the Speaker of the State House of Representatives will become governor. He is a Republican.

How much more left can you be than black? I think the Dems have turned against racism. It isn't just a matter of who votes for them, it's now them. You can see the difference. America will have to get used to intolerance of racism as a center position, not leftmost at all.

Wouldn't it be smart and convenient to defend racist governors to hold on to political power? No, it wouldn't be smart. It would be Repub. That's the other party. This isn't a good time to follow their example, a particularly bad time, maybe the worst ever time. Almost all of America is leftward to them except them.

I live in this state and I think Northam getting punished with bad polls and his image getting ruined is punishment enough -- but he really shouldn't be forced to resign. Per the Zaid Jilani article, why should Northam be punished for his callow act that occurred 35 years ago? People can change. Plus Democrats tolerated Robert Byrd!

Fairfax (lt gov) has more progressive positions than Northam (gov) in general.

What is the new element is the refusal to accept youth and the context of thirty years ago as mitigation. The Left is trying to force everyone else to accept the idea that one must have been ideological pure one's entire life, that there are no excuses, no forgiveness, no possibility of growing into a better person.
Intolerance of actual racism has been a centrist position for a long time. What is new is the idea that racism is the sin that can not be forgiven.

Let it be noted that for once I agree with -abe-.

Dems will decide this. I approve of the puritanical approach they are taking. It's brutal, and should be. People can change somewhere else.

You're right, it's new, and about time, way past time. It isn't even left, it's the way people ought to set high standards for public office. I'm not going to fake forgive for the sake of fake change.

I find the most astonishing thing about the yearbook photograph is the fact that it was considered acceptable for a University Yearbook in Virginia in 1984. That photo of a white man in blackface and another dressed in a KKK outfit was approved for publication by the yearbook editors and whatever University supervision was in place. As I understand it, the picture was not submitted my the Governor himself, but was selected by yearbook staff without his involvement

I am of two minds. On the one hand, it is utterly reprehensible. On the other hand, it was 35 years ago, and the guy has unequivocally renounced his own past behavior. Is there no such thing as redemption? On he other hand, what is this bit about admitting it was him, then denying it was him. I wish he would just go away. And the next in line is accused of sexual assault, and the next in line after that has also admitted a blackface stunt. What kind of country do we live in?

It's actually immaterial who outed the picture but right away the "more leftist elements" seized upon it as a distraction from Northam advocating for infanticide because his position might be seen as too extreme.

Whatever faults Trump may have, he did speak out courageously against abortion on several occasions and even said a few words in his SOTU. As for the women in white, most of them would not give a damn and should be wearing red given their indifference to, or actual support for late term abortion. Nancy Pelosi, the hypocrite, sponsored a bill tabled in the House (hasn't passed yet, to my knowledge) that would reverse Trump's Mexico City Policy cutting funding for abortion in foreign countries. Apart from being a waste of money, it is a waste of life and also immoral.

And by infanticide, I assume you are referring to letting one doctor, instead of three, approve a third trimester abortion, and and including some other serious health issues than severe deformation to allow for a third trimester abortion.

On an audio forum I put one member on my ignore list because I couldn't take more of his ramblings about how CD is a bad format and not suitable for high quality sound while analog audio formats rule. All of this on a science section of the forum. When I read the posts of zb here, I get similar feelings. It's just not about audio but politics.

Less abortion in Mexico means more illegal immigrants and children you can cage. Apparently that's not waste of money nor immoral. Republicans care about life before birth. After the baby is born they don't give a fuck. They are not pro life because they support capital punishments. They are pro fetus. They are so ignorant they don't know that their holy book the Bible doesn't condemn abortion, but it does condemn eating shellfish. How ironic is it to condemn abortion while eating shrimp! How ironic is it to want small government, one that stays away from our lives, but still wanting the government to control women's body.

Oh please. I'll bet you any money that he's paid off multiple mistresses to have abortions and keep quiet about it.
