The Debussy is very nice. Isn't it always? Mussorgsky's Pictures are superbly recorded, which helps give a bit more 'face' to the interpretation - which I find overly objective, short on fantasy. Bruckner's 6th is given a bold, propulsive reading, one of the best.

I watched the movie "Goya's Ghosts" last night (meh...), so I thought I'd listen to these pieces today. Very well played and recorded.

Woo doggy!  Sofya Melikyan is a name new to me, and on the evidence of this disc, she needs to record more post-haste.  Her themed disc contains four works by four women, two from last century and two from this century.  In the Gubaidulina sonata, Melikyan smokes Marcela Roggeri, herself quite good.  Melikyan makes the most of the unabashedly modernist piece, displaying exceptional command and extracting every last musical morsel.  Geghuni Chitchyan's Armenian Bas-Reliefs is a Bartokian smorgasbord; Kaija Saariaho's Prelude is a seven minute and change blend of Impressionism, spectral music, and a Ligetian style etude; and Raquel Quiaro's Cluster Suite opens very much living up to its title in the first piece and proceeds through a largely hard-hitting work, concluding with some bite and anger in the last piece.

I'd very much like to hear what Melikyan could do with Messiaen, or just about any core rep, or anything else she chooses to record.  It'll be pretty much impossible for me to resist her Granados and Mompou disc.

The acronym SOTA does not do justice to the sound quality.
No kidding! This contains some seriously intense playing and fantastic sound (via Qobuz 24/96)--thanks for posting it.

Wand's 1980 Cologne 7th is very assertive, very solar, very « E Major » - very different from Klemperer NPO for example. It's a thrilling performance. The impression it leaves is that of an immense reservoir of energy barely able to contain it from spilling. Almost exhausting, as a matter of fact. In that context it was wise of Wand to choose the Haas edition (no cymbal crash+timpani in the adagio's climax, what we get instead is a blinding blaze of brass). I need to explore more of Wand's Bruckner 7 - he recorded it again in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin.

Well it is minimal music and that is something wich can be too much for some listeners ;).For me I can enjoy it but it is not my favorite style of music. It can have a sort of hypnotic effect on the brain wich is necessary otherwise it is very tiring to listen to. It is a train of subtly changing rhythms. It can clear your head or you get nervous but that depends on the listener.
An example might be helpful.

Thanks for your reply. I understand you. The Stockhausen's style may be hard to digest.

Lately I've been obsessed with Norwegian composers and their symphonies. I was listening to the Irgens-Jensen's only attempt in the form (there is a choral symphony called Homeward that has never been recorded on CD, though). Listening to it with fresh ears allows me to be surprised much more, and what a great piece it is. Sometimes being too familiar with a work doesn't generate on me much pleasure.

The "50 Great Recordings" is an amazing box. All top drawer performers and recordings. And the sleeves and packaging are unusually robust and high quality.  It sells dirt cheap from the European Amazons.  Highly recommended as a gift/sampler for relatives mildly interested in classical.
It's all good...

I missed that one at the jpc sale, but will rectify that - prices on Amazon look good.  :)

This sounds tame; I'm not sure why, it think it has to do with their choice of intonation.
