Happy Christmas to all!

This is an interesting video. It was a Japanese broadcast on the occasion of his death, the newswoman says a lot of things about his life, and then we see clips of him being interviewed, in one he is cooking  :) and speaking in Italian about how that relates to conducting and in another he is speaking in German about Mahler 2.

Then, to fit the space of an hour we get only the last 3 mvmts of M2. Waltraud Meier is just gorgeous in the Urlicht, and it is an intense performance by he and a very impressive late-80s Philharmonia.

And also:

Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 5

Philadelphia Orchestra
Christoph Eschenbach

May 22, 2005
Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Japan

1hr17min - 1.36 GB

Again, Japanese broadcast, the video resolution is huge and extremely good quality, even after I compressed it some. The audio is basically very good, except - it has 'pops' from the audio stream. (I didn't record it!) Less noticeable when watching in some players as others. A fine, mostly undiosyncratic performance and a nice snapshot of his rather brief tenure there.

The first half of that concert is below (I separated that as we have varying tolerances of Lang Lang...):

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 4

Lang Lang
Philadelphia Orchestra
Christoph Eschenbach

May 22, 2005
Suntory Hall, Tokyo, Japan

It's not a must, and it's not compulsory either. But the competition heavily features russian works. And since there's only one violin concerto by Piotr Iliych... :D

I don't know how I've managed to miss this fact but www.eclassical.com features daily free downloads! :o

The first one is available on their home page - at the very bottom (under the heading Today's free classical MP3). Click on Get more free titles from eClassical.com and you will be taken to a page with a few more tracks (but NOT INCLUDING the one from the home page!). Here's what they're offering today:

A Polish Requiem/1: Lacrimosa , Antoni Wit , 5:02
Krysztof Penderecki
(this is on their title page)
a hint for those playing the mystery score game: you might want to download this!

(and on the "more" page:)
Mazurkas/1: Sustenuto,Jerzy Godziszewski,2:11
Karol Szymanowski

Pictures at an exhibition/02: Gnomus,Antoni Wit,2:41
Modest Mussorgsky

Pictures at an exhibition/09: Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks,Antoni Wit,1:16
Modest Mussorgsky

Three Pieces in Old Style/II,Andrzej Markowski,2:14
Henryk Górecki

Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor/3: Allegro con fuoco - Allegro moderato,Bartlomiej Niziol,6:12
Henryk Wieniawski

(dunno why but today's theme is apparently Polish music/performers...)

Maciek

Incidentally, I might mention that Niziol is a really good violinist (winner of the Wieniawski competition from a couple of years back).

Also I see the full concerto is available for download for just a dollar! Terrific  8) that is one of the most beautiful concertos of the 19th century. Thank you!

This is a TV broadcast, rather than a webcast, but I thought some here might be interested.

Tonight at 11:00 p.m. (other times depending on various PBS stations), Charlie Rose will be interviewing Alex Ross (author of The Rest is Noise) followed by an interview with Marin Alsop, conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Rose's website is here.
