One would think that two recordings of the 10 instrument reduction would sound alike, but that's not the case here. Very different balances and tempi make it sound like another work. I think I like both equally.

Good idea

Where I find it more appealing is when Bismuth uses an instrument with a lower tone, -- eg the Discurso de medio registro de dos baxones de quarto tono where it's organ and shoulder cello.

Anyone heard his Art of Fugue?

Symphony No. 3

I can't explain how this music resonates with me. It flows so naturally in my mind and body. Such a life-affirming piece of music!!

In addition, I'm convinced more and more Thomson was a great conductor. The orchestra does a thoroughly impressive job too. Looks like Nielsen and Thomson make a great team.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony Nos. 4, 5 & 6

From the following recordings:

Great choices John! I also like the 'England of Elizabeth' film music and the Tuba Concerto which I think also features on the Previn CD.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I am a great admirer of Arnell's music, and have almost all his orchestral works. Glad that you like his music too.
+1 especially symphonies 3 and 5.

Thanks, Jeffrey. Enjoyable listening for sure. Three Portraits of 'The England of Elizabeth' and the Tuba Concerto are both fine works. I agree.

A good wallow!

Great! And those are the best performances of both works IMO.

String quartet No. 9

Not as bitter as the latest quartets but it does pack a punch of much drive and with the always distinctive ironic touch. Stupendous work.

Stumbled across this excellent 2012 performance of Martinů's Double Concerto with the Radom Chamber Orchestra and Beethoven Academy Orchestra, conducted by Maciej Zoltowski. The young players are outstanding.

Bach : Cello Suites
Roel Dieltiens

I stumbled across this cellist by accident, and decided to investigate his recorded output.  He appears to be in the PI camp, at least for some of his recordings, and his performance of the Bach suites on a Baroque cello is well done, IMO.  He has recorded them twice, once in 1991 (the one above) and again in 2009.

These three works complement each other beautifully. It helps that they are among my favourites in their respective genres. A superb program, played with wonderful insight.
