An attractive collection, with excellent singers - and their accompanist - giving of their best.

The CD cover is also by Levitan, Spring, High Water. The connection is the title of SQ2, Spring Waters, which was taken from a novel by Turgenev.

Schnittke - Stille Musik. A few repeats of this by itself not having just listened to the preceding Cello Concerto No. 1 on the CD provide a much better experience. It takes more concentration to follow the sequences of sounds growing then dying away or echoing into nothingness, like turning up the sensitivity on one's hearing until when it ends left listening to silence itself.

959/i. This is not for me, the interpretation is just not capturing my imagination at all. I'll stick with Lonquich on alpha. My feeling is that Volodos is a pianists' pianist, it's for those who appreciate technique, touch, tone, more than I do.

Like I said in my first review, absolutely delightful. I am so enjoying this. What a remarkable ensemble, what unity and balance. Sublime textual clarity.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Listened to Berglund in this the other day.  Manze's interpretation does not get a very good rating from Victor Carr at Classicstoday.  He also describes the recording as "dim", which I find somewhat perplexing.

I haven't heard that recording but "dim" is a word that could also be applied to the sound quality of the more recent VW 7 & 9 release from the same stable.  It's also incredibly detailed - bringing out elements of the score of the Antartica that I simply haven't heard, and don't hear, in any other recording - and it's weird how "dim" and "detailed" can co-exist, but they do.

Now my TD:

Messiaen : Vingt Regards sur l'enfant Jésus : Steven Osborne

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000b0mv  BBC R3 stream available for another 2 weeks only.

Osborne is consistently slow, bringing out the Zen-like and contemplative side of Messiaen, which is the side I like.
Duration a little over 2 hours, much of which is silence or near-silence - unfortunately the audience is a bit restless.

Frank Bridge: Oration.

The front cover scene is a view from Bridge's house at Friston, near Eastbourne.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

This one has stuck last night and this morning again. Really good (particularly the first 2 movements) even if the 3rd movement lost me for a bit.

New arrival.

Georg Bohm. The Complete Organ Works, CD I.

Hans Davidsson plays on a newly build North German Baroque organ at Orgryte nya Kyrka in Gothenburg
Pitch: Choir pitch A=465 Hz.
Temperament: quarter -comma mean-tone

Although it is a first listen, I can already share some impressions about this recording.
Firstly this organ sounds fantastic, as if we a really listening to an old organ from the North German Baroque tradition. It is a large organ, yet I never got the impression that it was in any way overpowering the senses. It simply has the right tone.
Secondly, ever since I heard the complete organ works by Matthias Weckmann by Hans Davidsson, I succumbed to his mastery of expression and his technical excellence on the instrument. A recording I very much recommend. All these qualities you can find back in the interpretation of Georg Bohm's compositions.  His expression is unobtrusive, yet highly involving. Davidsson let the music flow in a discreet way, never in effect but rather affect. His registrations are well balanced, and are detailed. All layers are perfectly in balance, due to the recording engineer. It is simply the sound every organ addict loves to hear. All the pieces were recorded with the bellows treaded by foot. Yet you do not hear the works at all.
Already I recommend this set
