Mendelssohn: Octet [Janacek & Smetana Quartets]

This is a compelling performance of this wonderful, buoyant and thrilling work.

I love how they included a facsimile of the original score...pretty cool!   8)

Also, that is in fact a ten inch vinyl which I something that I really like.

Neat!  How hard/rare our copies of this--in good condition of course?

I have a soft spot for those old Marco Polo releases Cesar.
If you have the Chandos or Naxos recordings they will be better recorded but I find it a very enjoyable CD of both symphonies. It only arrived today - a brand new CD available very inexpensively.

Good to know, Jeffrey. Thanks. Some Marco Polo releases are more than good indeed.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Rosenberg - Violin concerto No. 2

Intense, aggresive, thought-provoking. There is a recording of the VC 1 but the sound quality is unbearable for my ears. Too bad.

La Mer

I don't have many recordings of this piece, and this one certainly fulfills my expectations.

Claude Debussy: Estampes. Claudio Arrau. Arrau's Debussy has been really clicking for me lately. I love his abstract, somewhat spaced out approach to the music. It gives the impression of a mature & serious artist having lived with these scores for decades and decades.

Looking forward to hearing (well, reading actually) your thoughts on his music.

Delighted to read that you also like the PHQ!   ;D  By the way, not certain whether or not you noticed, but the Pavel Haas Quartet split up Janacek's quartets between two albums...both of which I enjoy.  They included the excellent quartets by the composer whose name they took on each of the two albums.  I suspect that these quartets might also resonate with you as he was a student of Janacek's.His story--a way too brief one and alas, ending horribly.  You can read a bit about him here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavel_Haas

Best wishes,

PD

I have read a little bit on the tragic life of Pavel Haas. He died in Theresienstadt, no? I have heard none of his music, though. I think that's smart programming, coupling Haas with Janacek, giving a little exposure to a little-known composer to those who may have otherwise not heard any of his music. It would be nice to get both of those discs, but Supraphon CDs are pretty expensive, unfortunately for my limited budget.

I have no idea to be honest. I could not find a listing on either eBay or Discogs. I picked it up in a Charity Shop quite cheaply a number of years ago.

Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor, op.47. Hilary Hahn, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Swedish RSO. I love this recording. As for the work itself, it is growing on me, but I think it's one of Sibelius' most powerful and expansive works, alongside the 2nd and 7th symphonies, and Tapiola. Salonen proves he would be an absolutely killer Sibelian conductor, if only he conducted more of his works!

Great set!

Indeed it is. Really have enjoyed it thus far. I can't say I'm overly familiar with Villa-Lobos' SQs, but I'm acquainting myself with them.

Gorgeous work and performance. As I have mentioned before, Stravinsky had a certain magic on the podium.

A cappella works only, so far the best of the Carus set. Beautiful.

Kossuth from this disc:

My first listen ever to this work. Liszt of the Hungarian Rhapsodies lurks in the background.
