You didn't ask me, Andrei, but I would say 'no'. My favorite cycle is probably Andsnes/Pappano from several years back. Such dynamic performances and they may not be the most 'Russian', but I they do offer some rather thrilling playing.

I didn't ask you, John, but you are a tasteful and refined listener and your opinions are always informed --- so thanks, I put Andsnes/Pappano on "seek-and-capture" mode.  :)

Is it the best performance ever (of the PCs as well) as some reviewers, including critics, rave?

It's a great performance of the Rhapsody for certain. The Concertos tend to be faster paced than I prefer, but when I'm in a rush they do nicely  ;D  I'd take Rudy/Jansons/St. Pete to the desert island...or Ashkenazy/Previn/LSO.

Thanks, Andrei. If I were you, I'd definitely see you couldn't listen to some of the Andsnes/Pappano online. One of the things that struck me about their cycle is I haven't always been enamored with the 4th PC, but this performance really opened up my ears to it and I love it now.

As the next in the cycle, ditto.  :)

Mind your ears...it can get a wee bit noisy  ;)

More Shchedrin:

Old Russian Circus Music is good fun. The 2nd Symphony less so. In fact, its form is rather odd. Not one of his best works IMO.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Again: Symphony No.2
I would imagine that if you like Khachaturian this might appeal to you (Symphony No.2). I think it's on You Tube:

His 1st Symphony is fantastic as well, Jeffrey.

My favorite Holmboe symphony.

My favorite Holmboe symphony.

I've only heard the 8th and 9th but I like what I've heard and will explore the rest at some point. Re-listening to the 9th just now.

In terms of Shchedrin's orchestral music, the Concertos for Orchestra are all excellent and I rather enjoyed all of the PCs and the violin concerto, Concerto Cantabile. I'd say his best ballets are The Little Humpbacked Horse and Anna Karenina. I found The Seagull to be rather severe and unwavering in its dark defiance. Shchedrin is a rather uneven composer but I think he has composed some excellent works.

The special repertoire and the performance still makes it one of my favourite recordings by the Huelgas Ensemble. :)
