Moyzes: Symphony No. 2
Slovak RSO/Slovák

Good choice, fine orchestral works, actually rate them very high, although many a highbrow critic, amateur or professional, has some uninformed silliness they need to express.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

On JPC de is a sale, DaCapo, Arion, and many others. Just go to the neuerscheinungen. 256 of them waiting.

Liking Bruckner's 4th Symphony is one thing (I do). Liking all Bruckner's symphonies is another thing (I don't; except S1 and S4, all others bore me to tears).

A few months ago I queried a publication's rating of some top Beethoven works. I took the Bernstein Eroica to task as I'd heard it and thought it was ordinary. Some forum members suggested that I might be wrong about this so I went back to the article. I realised that I was referring to the cycle Lennie did with the VPO which wasn't what the article had recommended. They were talking about this NYPO performance. I'm fixing that now. My reference recordings for this are Toscanini NBCSO '49 and Leibowitz RPO.
Cheers

If you do not love the music, the music will not love you back.

I hope you enjoy the NYPO performance, it is one of my long-standing favourites. The version with the VPO isn't 'ordinary', it is dreadful.

Now playing for me as well:

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No.3 in E-flat major, op.55, the "Eroica". Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic

A damn fine performance. I'm glad the Eroica seems to be working for me again. It seemed I was rather burnt out on it for quite a while.

Faure: Piano Quintet No 1 in D minor, Op 89 - Quattor Parenin & Jean-Philippe Collard piano - I will not be intimidated by shadowy internet terrorist groups. It is a while since I listened to this disc and I don't remember the sound being so poor - perhaps it is time for a more modern recording.

Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, op.40. Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra

What a killer, absolutely underrated conductor Ormandy was. I had all but totally written him off from prejudice after seeing so many dismiss his legacy until I actually gave his music a chance. Now, my respect for him grows with each recording I hear, and the Philadelphia Orchestra under his reign has become one of my favorite American orchestras. This is a great performance of the Heldenleben. I may even prefer it over Reiner/Chicago.

A recent issue. Any thoughts?  :)

Francis Cutting, is a composer that I read a bit about some time ago, and listening to the samples I find his music inventive and approachable. would love to know on which instruments he plays.

Good morning all,

Grace Williams - chamber music

Really enjoyed this one.  Neo-classical chamber music, very well written and entertaining.

I have this recording also. My other two recording of these works are from mid 90's (Rogé/Quartuor Ysaÿe on Decca and Orth/Auryn Quartet on CPO). I wonder what is the best 21st century recording. Naxos released these recently, but people say it has reverb-heavy sound...  :P
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Thanks for your reply. The Decca recording sounds promising.
