CD 13

Lots of unknown repertoire that I wouldn't have discovered without this attractive set.

I found out after careful research into my collection, that I have all the music on Ricercar in this box already. A pity for I liked the cover :)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Erkki Salmenhaara (1941-2002)
Symphony No.4 (1971-2)
Absolutely briliant!
Powerful, moving, inspiriting, tonal. Interesting booklet notes from Kalevi Aho.
A definite recommendation to 'the usual suspects' (those who, more or less, share my musical tastes here).
This one had to come from Finland:

I see, well I only found downloads on Amazon, and JPC does not even lists it. No samples to listen to, so I think I must pass.

Amazon tells me that I ordered it in 2010, so clearly I need to fish it out!  ::)

LOL I bought it in 2011

It is a great set, beautiful music, well performed and beautifully recorded. The main reason for purchasing this anniversary set were the "Deutsche Baroque Kantaten". I am very happy with it, especially because it concerns so much music that has always had my interest .

Madiel

Poulenc, Le Bal masqué

First listen, but honestly, could you get any more Poulenc-like than this?

Also, while streaming, this set of albums with Malcolm Martineau as pianist (in this case as part of a chamber group) seems to be consistently good. I think if I end up deciding to buy more of Poulenc's songs on disc I would be purchasing the Martineau series.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Biffo

Brahms: Four Ballads, OP 10 - Paul Lewis piano

Todd

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

#24408
Poulenc, Concerto for 2 pianos

EDIT: This is fabulous music, one of the best Poulenc pieces I've heard.

Baroque chalumeau, clarinet, & other instruments - stimulated the other day by the Baroque Chalumeau disc posted by Que (top left below) and seeing a favorite performer, i.e. Jean-Claude Veilhan, I put together the playlist below on Spotify (own only the Graupner and recommended!) - listening on my den stereo via Apple TV - Dave :)

Here at least is a review of the CD Harry. It encouraged me to explore the work and I'm very glad to have done so. Apparently Salmenhaara did little to promote his own music, otherwise it might be much better known, the 4th Symphony in particular:

Fuga, the distributors, fortunately for me, had the CD on special offer when I ordered it. It was a bit of a song and dance ordering it as their website is, more or less, exclusively in Finnish but the person that I emailed about it was really helpful. The CD arrived surprisingly quickly.

Symphonic Addict

On his birthday: Symphony No. 5

Splendid and vigorous performance.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Interesting, Jeffrey. Finland has quite attractive symphonists besides Sibelius, Madetoja, Klami, Melartin, Kokkonen, Aho, among others.
