Pohjolas Daughter

Heard a new-to-me work the other day which I quite enjoyed.  It was Dutilleux's Métaboles.  :)

Penderecki - Polymorphia.

One of the most haunting and terrifying pieces of music.

How/where did you find the recording!?

Good morning, Brett!  Purchased 'pre-enjoyed' at McKays in Chattanooga, TN many moons ago. There are seven copies on Amazon reasonably priced.  As interesting as the music is the conductor's career, Rahbari is an expatriate Iranian who's encountered no small political/cultural strife. :(

Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring (arr. Joe Parrish for multitracked electric guitars) - Yes, could have posted this in non-classical listening, but Parrish (drummer for Jethro Tull) has done a masterful job of capturing the work's textures and moods. It seems so...natural. At least one friend called The Rite "the original metal," which might explain why the arrangement works so well.

From the comments, my favorite (acknowledging the opening bars): "As a bassoonist, it is my job to tell you: holy shit well done."

Spare and affecting, Hanson's Fantasy Variations on a Theme of Youth for Piano and Strings out-Rachmaninoffs Rachmaninoff for heart-on-your-sleeve romanticism.  This is the best recording I have, of several, of it.
Someday, someone is going to use it in a film, mark my words.

One of the most compelling CDs devoted to Ysaÿe I know. It comprises:

String Quintet in B Minor, Op. posth.
String Trio, "Le Londres" (London) (arr. J. Ysaye for string quartet)
Andante in B Minor for string quintet
Paganini Variations (arr. J. Ysaye for string quartet)

The first two works were the highlights to me.

Thanks for this, Cesar. I was not aware of this particular program - very interesting indeed.  :)

Thats a really fine set Jan, a real find, and so thinks Que too :)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Ordered. Thanks a lot. I like the Flemish music and his own compositions conducted by Rahbari.

P.s. I love Chattanooga.

Miklos Rozsa.

Violin concerto, opus 24.
Concerto for String Orchestra, opus 17.
Theme, Variations and Finale, opus 13..

Jennifer Pike, Violin.
BBC Philharmonic, Rumon Gamba.

This Violin Concerto is getting at me, I so love the second movement, starting with a beautiful "Lento cantabile" and I mean really Cantabile.
Jennifer Pike
is just the violinist for this work, her hands work magic. This whole series on Chandos is going from strength to strength.

Yes that would be a wise decision, this box is a marvel in itself and for a good price.
