I haven't made up my mind over this one. It's certainly impressive, powerfully played and all that. I have to rid myself of some firmly etched memories (of Klemperer, both live and studio, of Schuricht, Jochum and Wand). The scherzo here must be the nastiest, most contrasted I've heard - almost schizophrenic. I didn't know Haitink had it in him. Compared to his former self, this Munich performance is more daring and brutal than in Amsterdam, more sinewy, less upholstered than in Vienna. The latter is quite similar but the change of orchestra and recording venue makes a substantial difference. It would seem the bavarian forces are better suited to defend the conductor's lederhosen and tirolerhut concept. This one goes back in the cd player tomorrow.

Symphony No. 21, the latest in Hurwitz's Haydn Symphony Crusade:

Beautiful performance by the "Austro-Hungarian" group.

Then skipped ahead to 22, the already familiar "Philosopher":

Love the characterful wind playing.  This is one of the better sounding Goberman's in the Sony box (they are a mix of tape transfers and LP rips, and I think the ones from LP sound a bit strident.)

And then a bit of Tchaikovsky via Stravinsky:

Stürmisch Bewegt

I do love what Gramophone says about these works : "The suites and pieces for two bass viols by Marin Marais are among the gems of the French baroque repertory: beautifully crafted polyphonic textures and rich, though never quirky, harmony spun out in affecting sequences with apposite ornamentation..." (English as it ought to be writ).

Leben heißt nicht zu warten, bis der Sturm vorbeizieht, sondern lernen, im Regen zu tanzen.

Splendid idea! I'll join you with the same piece, but played by a different pianist, Charles Rosen.

Last work of the night -

NP: Malipiero Sinfonia No. 6, "Degli archi" (Vitello)

Simply put, this performance blows away both accounts on Naxos. There's something truly passionate and heart-rendering about this particular performance that does this music full justice.

Replaying a recent acquisition (something I often do)

I'm going to have to revisit this set. I recall enjoying and I'm usually not one for historical performances, but this is a well-played compilation.

T. D.

I like (and often even prefer) historical performances if sound quality is good enough. SQ of this release seems excellent, much better than expected.
The Johann Strauss arrangements (1 by AS, 1 by AW) on disc 4 I could live without, but I very much enjoy the other works/performances.

First listen to Haydn op.50/5, nicknamed 'The Dream'.

The 1st movement is making my ears very happy.

Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Do I really need the new Jarvi/DGG recording as I already have this fine performance?

Morning listening: Morales' Super Lamentationes.
This time on disc, which arrived yesterday.

A gorgeous recording. Can't say I am overall always a fan of Carles Magraner: eccentric and often with over-the-top instrumental accompaniments. But he hit the jackpot here. There is instrumental colla-parte accompaniment, by five viols (vihuelas de arco) and lute. But it is fortunately tastefully done and to subtle effect. Magraner used 6 singers, I suspects he doubles the tenors in the pieces for 4 of 5 voices.

A valuable addition to the repertoire of lamentations and sacred repertoire form the Iberian peninsula in general.

I'm afraid I do not like the sound of Cinquecento, the sound is too dense - heavy and bass rich.  I've had enough of it after 10 minutes. The music of the mass is OK, not more than that as far as I can see. Cleve is not for me.
