Bohuslav Martinu.

Early Orchestral Works, Volume III.

Vanishing Midnight.
Ballade (after Böcklin's picture "Villa" by the Sea)
Dream of the past.

Sinfonia Varsovia, Ian Hobson.
Agnieszka Kopacka, Piano.

A "Splendid buoyant performance". For me this is a favourite in this series, especially "Vanishing Midnight" & "Dream" of the past. The music clearly hits a nerve with me! Well recorded.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

It just sounds... like a TV game buzzer... with a sore throat... (nope, I am not an Organ specialist  )

I have found it on YT : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfN9pn8AfGk

About 30 secs in, and then about 1 min in  :-\

Yes, I got it. A most unusual sound I must admit for an organ [in my experience anyway, but I am no expert either].
It sounds like a badly tuned synthesizer to me.

Peculiar, isn't it ?

Paging Harry, Mandryka, Premont and Co...  0:)

Maybe you guys can shed some light on that sound please ? Thank you.

Wonderful disk.

Is her wonderful voice still holding up well?

I am continuing to revist Novák's orchestral music. After being left lukewarm to his music from earlier recordings, this Naxos release renews some interest for me.

I had this set playing (off Spotify) all of yesterday morning, and I really liked it!  :)

It's going to be a lot of Marais, but it is all superb. Can there be too much of a good thing?  :D

It is sumptuous sound to be sure, but I find the music-making to be a bit serious-minded, so personally I would say that a little goes a long way.

La Reveuse bring more life to the music, more ornament, more variety of texture.  But then, they are not attempting a catalogue of all the Pieces de Viole ...

Now for something different.

Ligeti: Atmospheres [Bernstein/NYP]

Through the good graces of a friend on this forum I have been sent a download of this work from his Leonard Bernstein big box edition. He has graciously made it available to me unsolicited and I am very thankful he did. I really like it. I found the sound world to be terrifically exciting and compelling. Both my nerves and ears remain unshattered. John [MI] should be pleased.  ;D

I am being stalked. :o I have just returned to my download of Astounding Science Fiction May 1942 and while scrolling through this jumped right out at me...

Excellent, Fergus. 8) Ligeti's sound-world isn't too far removed from Varèse, especially in that particular work, Atmosphères.

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas [Backhaus]

Piano Sonata No. 30 Op. 109 I was particularly attracted to this one of the late sonatas for some reason. I found it to be very appealing and engaging listening. It felt that there was something different about it. Did LvB have something in particular on his mind when he composed it I wonder? It is serenely delivered by Backhaus.

I just couldn't get into this recording. I didn't think much of the conductor's accompaniment and the orchestra aren't any better. Also, Piau has a wonderful voice, but not in Germanic music, IMHO.

My pleasure, but I encourage you to continue exploring this composer's oeuvre. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by your findings.

Hoffmeister, Franz Anton (1754-1812) - Piano Sonatas w/ Biliana Tzinlikova - she has recorded the three volumes shown below on the Grand Piano label w/ superb sound - own the first two (inexpensive purchases from BRO, i.e. Berkshire Record Outlet) and listening to the third on Spotify - of course the 'greats' of his times in this repertoire were Haydn, Mozart, & Beethoven, but Hoffmeister may be in the 'second tier' but is quite good and enjoyable - reviews attached for those interested.  Dave :)
