I think some of his orchestral and concerto music works fine, but I absolutely get your dumbass point  :P

Now playing the great first disc from this, Silvestri and Berglund conducting:

The Tallis is stunning under Silvestri.
+1!

Starting off my morning with this masterpiece:

Tippett
Concerto for Double String Orchestra
ASMF
Marriner

I only like a handful of Tippett works: the Piano Concerto, The Midsummer Marriage, Fantasia Concertante, Fantasia on a Theme of Handel, A Child of Our Time and that's pretty much it. I just can't get into his later works and I do like avant-garde music like Ligeti and Boulez, but Tippett's development as a composer never did much for me.
You're not alone there, though I should revisit some of the recordings that I have of his.

Witold Lutoslawski
So far, Mala suita (Little Suite)
and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra

Mala suita - on first listen, alright but not keen on
Very different reaction to his cello concerto though!  Fascinating, on the edge of your seat kind of ride for me.  ;D

Thnx!  :) I'll line it up for a thorough listening session on Spotify.

McComb was also positive on the recording of the Gombert masses I recently got.
I try to buy some of his highest star rated discs, and he seems reasonably reliable according to my tastes.

I recently bought and listened to this disc which he also rates highly (****), and it is very fine IMO:

Prokofiev
Symhony-Concerto in E minor, Op. 125
Rafael Wallfisch, cello

This is still the best performance of this piece, IMHO.

Early sixties BPO ? That's one of the best versions ever IMO.

It was this one...Niels Viggo Bentzon: 5th Symphony which Irons had listened to from the thread about lessor known composers.  I don't know though whether or not it was the same recording.  This is the one that I had tried listening to yesterday:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8PJ9DAFDfA
Can't find the first movement, but then I still need to make my morning coffee!

First movement here, PD.  https://youtu.be/4nkqODqa_IY

Thank you.  Was that the same one that you listened to yesterday Irons?  Personally, I found the ads to be very intrusive.   >:( :(

TD

Arnold Schoenberg
String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, Op. 7

As part of a 2-CD set of all of his quartets with the New Vienna String Quartet on Philips

Lovely SQ and wonderful playing (and sound) by the quartet; first recording that I recall hearing with them playing.

That is a fantastic CD!

I was nonplussed by it sadly but, then again, it was a first listen to those works. I'll revisit another time.

Great CD John. I like the Concerto for Double String Orchestra. The Suite for the Birthday of Prince Charles and the first two symphonies. I met some old colleagues for a pub lunch yesterday. One of them worked for Mrs Tippett (the composer's mother) in his youth, as a gardener. The composer found him fast asleep in a wheelbarrow in the garden one day.  ;D

I really enjoyed the Sanguine Fan, great music. Can't think of any other composer who portrays this kind of soundworld than Elgar.

I'll have to see whether or not I might have his cello sonatas (not in my Rostropovich set).

España w/ Jean-Francois Heisser; inexpensive 6-disc box of Spanish piano music (composers and works listed on back of box, 2nd pic below) - review attached from ClassicsToday - these were recorded from 1989-1996 - recorded sound is excellent and performances uniformly well done - a cheap introduction to this national genre.  Recommended.  Dave :)
