Morning listening:

Last time I visited this set, I lost interest in the music and never got to the end of this set.
While the instrument is nice and the playing is excellent. I guess what did me in, was the sheer endless supply of chorale settings (9 out of 12 discs) - all in similar style.

Now, listening with "fresh ears", these are still charming for what they are. And still in excellent performances and well recorded. A keeper on 2nd thought, for an occasional dip.  :)

A fabulous fine set, I enjoyed it very much. Just looked through my listening files, and saw that I played this set 5 times in a row, the endless supply of chorales appeals to my sense of balance. :)
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

I forgot to menton the Zanin organ in Padua, which is new (2006) but I wouldn't be able to tell that this was an Italian remake of a Northern German Baroque organ. It's a pity thay Brilliant isn't able to deliver this recording quality every time.

I am a great admirer of the Zanin organs, and some years ago I had a very interesting email conversation with the builder, about his very organ.
I think if you are listening to a high res hifi, one can hear all the sonorities of a Northern German instrument at full blast, so Zanin succeeded in creating a wonderful organ. That you could not tell that is a Italian remake is a great compliment. :)

JS Bach - Christmas Oratorio [Jacobs]

Christmas Oratorio - Part VI For the Feast of Epiphany [Jacobs]

The opening movement is suitably joyous and celebratory with the glory of the heavenly trumpets in full voice. All of the vocal lines are particularly fine here. The tone for the balance of the work is one of a mixture of pensiveness and slightly restrained celebration. I like the overall atmosphere and pacing of this presentation. This is a fine performance from all concerned.

It is on spotify if you want to hear it I found it quite well done.  Although in Bible Songs the Organ could easily dround out the soloist at times

Thank you for that.

My reference Rachmaninov Symphony set! The Second is perhaps my favorite recording - the Concertgebouw sounds gorgeous.

Yes, I am finding it excellent so far.

Traverso

Beethoven

string quartet Op. 132

A great quartet played by a great ensemble, this one is the 'Live" recording wich is even better than the studio recording.
I discovered this quartet by reading the Huxley novel "Point Counter Point" from 1928. This novel pays attention to this quartet, which prompted me to go to the record store. and bought the (fine) recording with the  LaSalle Quartet

I'm sure I picked up this album because of extensive praise for the performances. The recording sounds incredibly good for its age (1959, and the Schubert Octet recording is 1957).

Scriabin: Symphony No. 2
Moscow SO/Golovschin

Maybe because it's only 6 days into the new year, Scriabin's 150th is largely going without fanfare, which is unfortunate given what a remarkable composer he was.

I've always wished that someone would somehow try arranging The Ring as a piano concerto - it would make the musical ongoings more clear, and probably be popular among the no-singing-please-fans. Alas, a heretic project, and unlikely to happen, in spite of the many other arrangements that have been done.
