CPE Bach.

Cello concertos.

Tim Hugh, Cello.
Bournemouth Sinfonietta, Richard Studt.

I am surprised by the quality of these performances. Energetic, refined, and detailed in expression. Pretty good tempi, and fine articulation.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Malipiero, Symphony No 6 (degli Archi)

A beautifully wrought piece, and I don't find I have any significant complaints about the recording this time.

People who know Rousset know what to expect in terms of basic approach. People who know French baroque keyboard music genre Sun King will know what to expect: it is from a manuscript which used to belong to Lydie de Rochefort-Théobon, Louis XIV's mistress before Montespan. Top of the Pops in 1670s Versailles.  I would say that the Lully/D'Anglebert is slightly calmer than his earlier recordings. But no -- not for me. Just no.

His playing seems a bit compressed, unbalanced and restless, after listening to a few samples. I love his Couperin  :)

CPE Bach.

Three Sonatas for Harpsichord and Violin.

Geoffrey Thomas, Harpsichord.
Laszlo Paulik, Violin

Fine performances, interesting music, but this so called high res recording has a Violin sound that might cut of your ears off altogether.

Excellent performance of one of my favorite works.

This entire Chávez chamber music series (four volumes in all) is an incredible addition to this composer's discography.

Bantock: Pagan Symphony [Handley]

This work is very atmospheric and quite dramatic and exciting in places. It is a musical story well presented. I like Bantock's scoring throughout the work with the exception of the solo violin voice in the second movement which comes across to me as being too weak. Otherwise wonderful scoring throughout. The conclusion is big, bold and dramatic.

Try the sommeil d'Armide. I preferred it to his performance in the D'Anglebert set.

This is arguably the best of those Hyperion Bantock recordings.

Cheers, Jeffrey. This is my first foray into the music of Bantock. I had none of his music in my collection prior to this.

The Sanctus was very familiar to me, but I don't think from this Mass. The subtitle 'Gesänge zur Feier des heiligen Opfers der Messe' is more apt since these are essentially strophic hymns.

Sawallisch makes the best of the repetition, and the instrumental winds add much more color from the organ only version.

Listening to another volume of that same series here (good day to you, SH!).

I bought this in Barcelona a couple of days ago and...it turns out it's the only volume of Almeida's Malipiero symphony series I already had in my collection! I feel so silly. :-[ But well, I'll listen to it as if it were the first time  ;). So far, enjoying it!
