Thomas de Hartmann.

Orchestral works.

Koliadky Noels Ukrainiens.
Symphonie Poeme.
Concerto Andaluz for solo Flute, Strings and Percussion.
Une Fete en Ukraine, Suite for Large Orchestra.

Bulent Evcil, Flute.
Lviv National PO of Ukraine, Theodore Kuchar.

Also one of the best CD'S I bought this year. Many of those musicians are fighting or dying for their country, lets never forget that. Hartman his music was neglected and forgotten for many years, but this fine orchestra shows us that this was not deserved. The music is expertly written, and clearly shows his genius. I for one hope on many sequels, in which all his music will be on offer for our ears and heart. Really good performances and ditto sound.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

No.5 is a masterpiece IMO - very moving in the circumstances of its creation.

You make a very good point Harry and thank you for introducing me/us to this fine composer.

Henze, Symphony No 5

I forgot that I was had a little project of listening to the Henze symphonies a few years ago which I didn't complete. Listened to the fifth symphony today, in Henze's own recording and in the Janowski recording. I found it more difficult to absorb than some other works by Henze. The Janowski recording benefited from more opulent sound, the Henze recording was more focused. I will have to return to it at some point.

Glazunov: Raymonda, Suite from the Ballet [Serebrier]

This is really wonderful music. It has everything; wonderfully expansive and engaging music, wonderful orchestration, an abundance of lyricism and wonderful atmosphere.

Nice! I dig a lot of Henze's music. He was a true musical chameleon, too. You never know what kind of piece you're going to hear.

Thomson

This recording is a compilation that includes works not included in the following set (w/ the exception of The Lark Ascending, which is in the concertos set):

There is also a recording of Dona nobis pacem and Five Mystical Songs:

I have to say that Thomson's Vaughan Williams is outstanding and, IMHO, an essential acquisition for those who love this composer's music.

Gernsheim, Friedrich (1839-1916) - Symphonies, Piano Quintets, & Piano Quartets - four of the half dozen discs in my collection - all enjoyable; short bio quoted below; list of his compositions HERE; although Brahms and Bruch often come up as influences, Gernsheim was gifted w/ his own composing skills.  There are alternate recordings of some of his works, esp. on CPO - reviews attached of those shown (impressive Fanfare comments).  Dave :)

QuoteGernsheim, Friedrich was a German composer, conductor, and teacher. Born in Worms, he was a child prodigy, both as performer and composer. He taught and conducted at Cologne and Rotterdam, and from 1890 in Berlin. Finally he became director of a master class in composition at the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts. During his early years as conductor he promoted the works of Brahms. His own compositions, which number over a hundred, include piano and chamber works, four symphonies, cantatas, choral compositions, and songs. Their idiom is generally conservative, although innovations appear in his late period. His attitude to Judaism seems to have been passive although he gave the subtitle Mirjam to his third symphony, op. 54, in which he depicted Miriam's song of triumph at the Red Sea; and he also wrote an Elohenu for cello and orchestra or piano (1882). The greater part of his papers and manuscripts were donated in 1966 to the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. (Source)
