Thanks, now subscribed to their YouTube channel! (I'm a big fan of the orchestra, but didn't realize the chorus has a channel, too.) Some other tempting things, e.g., Rachmaninov Vespers, and works by Elliott Carter and Hans Zender.

Yeah, I was particularly excited by the Carter release too. Their albums of Villa-Lobos, Hindemith, and Ives choral music are good surveys as well!

Barber: Symphony No. 1 [Alsop]

I like the assertive and declamatory opening to this work. It is both powerful and expressive. I like the musical language and content as the movement progresses. I also like the gradual build up of tension and drama in the movement. The Scherzo-like second movement is an exercise in perpetual movement and forward momentum! I like the scoring in this movement. The final movement is wonderfully lyrical, wistful, poignant and atmospheric. The work concludes with a satisfactory and definitive resolution.

Just listening to this as a prelude to the Steinberg recording. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, the music is very interesting, the audio makes the quiet passages sound too distant.

Not sure why the 'Dresden Amen' always moves me as much as it does. Is it the Wagner/Parsifal associations? Or is it something about the chord progression all by itself. Not sure. But I love it, and the other Lutheran tunes scattered throughout this wonderful symphony.

I came to this one last among the Mendelssohn symphonies, and it surprised me just how well I like it.

I've listened to this a few times recently. I started out enjoying it fine, and it has grown on me. I might say that, in a sense, it confounds my customary listening practice of going on to listen to more. I find my ear satiated, as after a hearty meal.

It's taking me a week to listen to this work, one movement at a time. I am listening to Marriner/ASMF (in the Philips Mozart Edition). I am planning to revisit in a PI recording when done, can't decide which.

Expected good things.  Got very good things.  This may well be the best version of the Schoenberg I've heard.  Of course, I've heard only a few, though only from top shelf pianists (eg, Pollini, Uchida, and Brendel).

Harty: With the Wild Geese
Thomson: Ulster

A very nice romantic tone poem. The booklet notes mention similarity to Tchaikovsky, which I heard, but Irish folk music is an equally important influence. I particularly liked the beauty of the section The Night Before The Battle.

Very nice! "Tchaikovsky goes to Ireland" would be quite an apt description of this wonderful work.

I appreciate this meditative/contemplative music, despite my lack of understanding of the sung content. Sometimes the music itself is enough.  Russian Orthodox chant of psalms and liturgical texts will do today.
