Same can be said of the Grieg and 1st Tchaikovsky Piano Concertos.

I do not like the Grieg but I am partial to the Tchaikovsky 1st.

Fantastic! Everyone here seems to be on a Mahler kick while I'm on a Bruckner kick. Strange how the world works. :)

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 [Boulez]

Both the opening and closing passages of the first movement are simply divine. It is expressive, expansive and filled with yearning. This is bookended by a powerful outpouring of emotion. Once again with Boulez, it is a very strong and powerful presentation of this movement. It is quite atmospheric, sometimes brooding and sometimes menacing but always very effective in the delivery of the music.
The second movement is an animated presentation and I also like the drive and energy in it. The details in the music are well displayed here.
The third movement is even more animated than the second and it is also well driven but it is not frenetic. It is exciting, lively and one feels that one is being told a story here.
The heart-rending music of the final movement is wonderfully interpreted by Boulez. It is robust but passionate, expansive and emotion laden without a scintilla of sentimentality to it.

The brass are given a fair outing throughout this version of M9. They are very effective but are also well controlled and balanced. I like the pacing of the overall work. I find that it helps with creating the very fine atmosphere throughout the recording.

Having a second go at this recording.

My ears are, whatever the reason might be, liking this much more than they did the first time.

Tape Music ∞ is a participatory piece for any number of participants and electronic playback. Performance is meant as a kind of musical play and can be done by those without musical training. It is part of my Quotidian Series, focusing on the sounds around us that we often ignore.  Each performer has a small cardboard box with a lid (such as a shoebox), a roll of tape on a dispenser with teeth and a blunt object (such as a pencil). The conductor cues the performers with placards showing a variety of gestures, including breaking, ripping, snapping, scrunching, and palming the tape, as well as actions such as drumming on and ripping the boxes.
