Piotr ll'yich Tchaikovsky.
Symphony No. 4.
Nutcracker Suite.
Danses Caracterisques.
Valse de Fleurs.
Anima Eterna, Jos van Immerseel.

For me this is the best performance of the 4th Symphony, period!
On authentic instruments no less, the way Tchaikovsky heard it. A magnificent performance in interpretation and recording. I would have wished that van Immerseel would have recorded all orchestral works of my favourite composer.
The Nutcracker suits sounds hilarious and so much fun, as the rest of the pieces on this disc.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Haydn 76-78, Goodman/Hanover Band

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Nothing to add, this is simply perfect, in every respect. This is the interpretation we all need to have. I think its definitive.

Fantastic performance of a jaw-dropping masterpiece. And the orchestration? Ravel really outdid himself!
So much great music, so little time...

Richard Strauss.
Orchestral Works.
CD IV.
Violin Concerto in D minor.
Sinfonia Domestica.
Staatskapelle Dresden, Rudolf Kempe.

What a wonderful box so far, Kempe is simply the man for Strauss, its in his DNA. Well recorded performances and hugely satisfying. I always loved the Violin concerto, which is alas not played anymore in the concert hall, and rarely recorded. It gets a ravishing performance by the violinist Ulf Hoelscher, his tone is warm and convincing in the romantic department, compassion and deeply felt emotions are abound. I am happy with this box, gifted by a good friend, who alas died some years ago, thus I remember him by this box on which he has written a dedication which I treasure of course. The Sinfonia Domestica grabs me every time when I listen to Kempe's take. It all fits, orchestra, conductor and the sound engineers (Claus Struben). This is a box to have and to hold, all performances are top-notch, also the sound often state of the art.

That's a lovely CD (I'm especially fond of the 3rd Symphony) which I bought in its original CD release (with a nicer Pre-Raphaelite painting cover).

Rimsky-Korsakov
(New arrival) Russian Easter Festival Overture - a beautifully played performance (LSO/Herman Scherchen) This is a 1954 recording, remastered by Michael J Dutton in 1986. It combines great urgency with moments of poetic insight. I bought this dirt-cheap S/H on Amazon UK and am delighted with it and I haven't even got on to Antar yet! R-K was my first classical music love.
